Yuan Xi

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Yuan Xi is Yuan Shao’s second son and Lady Zhen’s husband. His place in the story is defined less by individual actions than by the family’s succession struggle and its collapse: after Cao Cao defeats the Yuans, Yuan Xi and Yuan Shang flee into the desert, seek refuge in Liaodong, and are killed by its prefect, who sends their heads to Cao Cao. Their deaths mark the end of Yuan rule in the north and clear the way for Cao Cao to turn his attention south.

Identity and Family

Yuan Xi is introduced through Lady Liu, Yuan Shao’s wife, who identifies Lady Zhen as the wife of her second son. The account gives no separate description of Yuan Xi’s character or conduct in this scene; his identity is conveyed through his position in Yuan Shao’s family and his marriage.

That marriage becomes consequential after Cao Cao’s forces take the Yuan stronghold. Cao Pi encounters Lady Liu and Lady Zhen, and, struck by Lady Zhen’s beauty, offers to protect her. Cao Cao approves the match, and Cao Pi and Lady Zhen marry shortly afterward. Yuan Xi is thus displaced from the account of his marriage as the victorious Cao family takes Lady Zhen into its own household.

Flight and Death

After Yuan Tan is killed, Cao Cao pursues the remaining brothers, Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi. They escape into the desert in search of freedom, but their flight carries them farther into unfamiliar country and toward hostile local tribes. The arrival of winter worsens the dangers of a campaign already being fought in harsh terrain.

The brothers eventually seek sanctuary from the prefect of Liaodong. He fears that sheltering them would make Cao Cao his enemy, and chooses to have them killed instead. He sends their heads to Cao Cao, converting a plea for refuge into the final act of the family’s defeat.

The End of Yuan Rule

Yuan Xi’s fate is narrated as part of the extinction of Yuan Shao’s ruling line in the north. With Yuan Tan dead and Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi killed, the account declares that Yuan rule has ended. The outcome also changes the strategic direction of the story: once Cao Cao has conquered the north, he can begin planning an assault on the south.

Yuan Xi therefore functions as one of the final figures in the Yuan family’s political collapse. His marriage links him to Lady Zhen’s transfer into Cao Pi’s household, while his flight and death complete the sequence by which the surviving Yuan brothers lose both sanctuary and power.
