The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Lady Zou, the widow of Zhang Ji, becomes the focus of Cao Cao’s attention while he is campaigning against Lü Bu. Their affair diverts him from military affairs and provokes Zhang Xiu, whose night attack on Cao Cao’s camp turns a private entanglement into a crisis with lasting consequences for Cao Cao’s household and forces.

Identity and Background

The narrative identifies Lady Zou as Zhang Ji’s widow and Zhang Xiu’s aunt. Her place in this family network matters politically: Cao Cao’s involvement with her offends Zhang Xiu, a commander whose response is to exploit Cao Cao’s distraction and attack his camp.

Role in the Wancheng Crisis

Cao Cao becomes absorbed in his relationship with Lady Zou and has guards stationed outside his tent. The account says that, day after day and night after night, he gives himself over to the affair and forgets other concerns. This inattention weakens his readiness at a moment when he is already engaged in conflict with Lü Bu.

Zhang Xiu’s anger supplies the immediate cause of the attack. He strikes Cao Cao’s camp at night, taking advantage of the commander’s preoccupation. Lady Zou is therefore central to the episode’s chain of cause and consequence, although the supplied account describes Cao Cao’s conduct and Zhang Xiu’s response rather than presenting her own words or decisions.

Consequences and Narrative Significance

The assault brings severe losses to Cao Cao’s side. His guard, Dian Wei, dies defending him, and Cao Ang gives Cao Cao his own horse to help him escape before he is killed. The episode makes the cost of Cao Cao’s distraction concrete: his desire is not treated as a private matter alone, but as a vulnerability that exposes his camp and endangers those around him.

Lady Zou’s narrative function is defined chiefly through this intersection of intimate attachment, kinship, and command. As Zhang Xiu’s aunt and Cao Cao’s lover, she links the two men’s personal conflict to military action; the account does not, however, establish her motives or assign her responsibility for the attack. The resulting episode instead emphasizes Cao Cao’s lapse in attention and the deadly consequences of Zhang Xiu’s retaliation.
