Zhu Ran
The Romance of the Three KingdomsZhu Ran is a Wu commander whose role is defined by two encounters with retreating enemies: he helps position the traps against Guan Yu at Maicheng, then leads troops against Xuande during the aftermath of the battle at Yiling. The first operation helps close Guan Yu’s escape; the second ends with Zhu Ran’s death at the hands of Zhao Zilong, who opens a path for Xuande to reach safety.
Ambush at Maicheng
During the siege of Maicheng, Lü Meng proposes leaving the north gate apparently open so that Guan Yu will choose it as an escape route. Zhu Ran is assigned five thousand crack troops and placed a few miles beyond that gate. Pan Zhang commands a second trap farther along the road, also with five thousand men. The plan uses the narrow route and the likely direction of Guan Yu’s flight to turn an escape attempt into an ambush.
Guan Yu leaves the besieged town at night with Guan Ping and Zhao Lei and about two hundred men. Zhu Ran’s troops attack after the party has travelled north. Guan Yu fights his way past the first assault, but Zhu Ran’s men then charge again, forcing him to turn onto a minor road toward Linju. Zhu Ran overwhelms the rearguard and pursues the fleeing party. His assignment thus makes him a key part of the operation designed to catch Guan Yu beyond Maicheng.
Attack during Xuande’s retreat
Later, during the fighting after Yiling, Zhu Ran again takes part in a carefully arranged attack. Lu Xun orders Zhu Ran to advance upstream by boat, with the boats filled with straw. The broader assault is coordinated with attacks on both riverbanks and an instruction to set fire to all forty of the enemy camps. The use of boats and prepared incendiary bundles makes Zhu Ran’s advance part of a wider strike against Xuande’s encampments rather than an isolated engagement.
As the attack throws the camps into confusion, Xuande and his escort flee toward Baidi. The pursuing Wu force catches them on the way. Zhu Ran and his men block their route, leaving Xuande to cry that he is about to die; Zhang Bao and Guan Xing cannot break through, and arrows take a heavy toll on the fleeing party. The encounter turns when Zhao Zilong arrives with a force, cuts through Zhu Ran’s men, and rescues Xuande. In the mêlée, Zhao Zilong kills Zhu Ran, and the pursuit is abandoned as Lu Xun withdraws his troops.
Narrative role and ending
Across these scenes, Zhu Ran is presented through military function: he commands a substantial force at a strategically chosen position, first on the escape road north from Maicheng and later in the pursuit of Xuande. In both episodes, terrain and timing shape his role. The narrow road makes the first ambush possible; the route to Baidi becomes the site of the second confrontation.
The contrast between the two outcomes gives his appearances their narrative shape. At Maicheng, Zhu Ran’s pursuit contributes to the capture of Guan Yu’s party. Against Xuande, however, he is stopped by Zhao Zilong, whose intervention saves the ruler and ends Zhu Ran’s part in the campaign. The episode establishes both the reach of Wu’s pursuit and its limit: Xuande escapes, while Zhu Ran does not survive the encounter.
