The Predator’s Method

The Predator’s Method
A planned erasure
Norman’s specialized ability allows him to interfere with another person’s brain through physical contact. Grantchester uses this capability selectively to remove incriminating memories and preserve the Grafter conspiracy.
The method turns memory into a security vulnerability. Myfanwy’s intelligence and authority make her particularly dangerous to the plot, so her identity is targeted rather than merely her body.
The First Erasure

The First Erasure
The Rook disappears
Grantchester and Norman attack Myfanwy in the Rookery, intending to remove her memories and take her for examination. She is left without the past that made her the Checquy’s administrative Rook and escapes before the attackers can secure her.
The attack succeeds in destroying autobiographical memory but fails to produce obedience. Her remaining instincts and emerging power disrupt the conspirators’ plans.
A Second Attempt

A Second Attempt
The successor is captured
Grantchester’s people seize Myfanwy and restrain her power through Norman’s touch. Grantchester explains that the original plan was to exploit or dissect her after erasure, and that the successor now knows enough to require a more complete clearing.
The threat makes the stakes brutally personal. Myfanwy faces not simply death but the destruction of the self she has built since waking.
The Emergency Injector

The Emergency Injector
A safeguard becomes a weapon
As Norman begins to invade her mind, Myfanwy remembers the emergency injector carried in the coat prepared by her predecessor. She uses it to disrupt Norman’s engineered physiology and recover control of her own power.
A mundane survival measure becomes the means of resisting a sophisticated biological system. The earlier letter’s practical care saves the successor at the moment abstract warnings could not.
An Identity Still at Risk

An Identity Still at Risk
Survival does not settle disclosure
Myfanwy defeats Norman and survives without losing her new memories. She nevertheless conceals her amnesia from most of the Court, fearing that it could cost her the Rook’s position or lead others to question her legitimacy.
Her identity is no longer simply a mystery to solve. It is a secret she actively manages while deciding how much truth the institution can be trusted to hear.
