People Treated as Instruments
The RookThis flow traces how the Checquy and Grafters turn human beings into institutional assets, and how Myfanwy challenges that logic.

A Weapon in Childhood

A Weapon in Childhood
A child valued for capability
The Checquy identifies Myfanwy’s power and removes her from her family to train her for national service. The institution recognizes her unusual potential more readily than it recognizes her grief or reluctance.
Myfanwy eventually develops professional skill, but her path exposes the difference between caring for a child and preparing an asset. Her success does not make the initial coercion harmless.
A Body as a System

A Body as a System
Control without consent
Myfanwy’s ability lets her interrupt bodily systems, introduce sensations, and affect another person’s physical agency. Checquy instructors encourage her to develop that ability despite her moral and emotional discomfort.
Her power makes the institution’s assumptions visible: a useful capability can also be a violation. The predecessor’s reluctance is not a simple weakness but a response to what the ability allows her to do to other people.
A Body Rebuilt for War

A Body Rebuilt for War
Enhancement as manufacture
Grafter agents such as Van Syoc carry extensive alterations that turn bones, organs, and nervous systems into armor, communication equipment, and weapons. Camp Caius applies a related logic to children, creating capabilities through surgery rather than natural powers.
The technical brilliance does not obscure the human cost. Bodies become platforms whose owners may lose control of their own systems.
Citizens Inside the Weapon

Citizens Inside the Weapon
Captives reduced to components
The Reading cube incorporates people into a single engineered structure and suppresses their individual initiative. Myfanwy senses the histories and sensations held within it, discovering that the weapon is made from human lives rather than anonymous material.
Her effort to destroy the controlling system is also a refusal to accept the captives as expendable parts. The event turns an abstract warning about Grafter methods into a physical moral crisis.
An Alternative to Disposal

An Alternative to Disposal
Children are not failed experiments
After the Camp Caius program is exposed, Myfanwy wants its surviving children to be rehabilitated rather than simply discarded or treated as future enemies. She recognizes that many have been shaped by adults who controlled their bodies and choices.
The commitment does not guarantee an easy solution. It marks a different standard of responsibility: defeating the system also requires care for those it has produced.
