Bath Purple Fungus Incident
The RookThe Bath Purple Fungus Incident is a manifestation at 34 Bennett Street that turns a Checquy response into a test of procedure, rank, and Myfanwy Thomas’s capacity to understand an unfamiliar system. A house filled with chanting people and spreading fungus consumes successive teams; Myfanwy ultimately identifies how the fungus directs its hosts and disrupts that connection, stopping the chanting and opening the pods in which Checquy personnel have been held.
Causes and Initial Response
The incident began before the Checquy knew what was happening inside the house. At 1:55 a.m., Constables O’Hara and Parker arrived at 34 Bennett Street, found the door open, and entered. Minutes later, a neighbor called again about screams; during the call, the screams stopped and chanting resumed. The emergency services supervisor alerted the Bath chief of police, who followed standing instructions and contacted the local Checquy office.
The response followed the organization’s standard procedures. The street was sealed and a perimeter established. When the first Pawn team failed to return in recognizable form, violet lights flickered, screams followed, and a stream of viscous material came from a window. The team could not yet determine whether its personnel were among it. The severity of this first loss did not immediately elevate the incident to emergency status: another, larger Pawn team was sent in with cameras and continuous radio contact.
That second team’s camera feed failed, its radio contact stopped, and the same pattern of screams and escaping material followed, while the chanting continued. Only then did the local report contact the Rookery and request a Barghest team. Myfanwy, travelling to Bath, understood the immediate danger as a house that consumed people, but the procedural chronology also exposed a more unsettling failure: formal compliance had not prevented repeated losses.
The House and Its Defenders
The next entry into the house was monitored remotely. The Rookery staff detected a change in the chanting and were comparing it with earlier recordings. As the Pawn team reached an ajar front door, one Pawn was abruptly pulled inside. The other camera views swung toward a scream, then a rising wave of material covered the cameras; screams and gunfire briefly followed. The screens could show the attack only until the house’s growth overwhelmed the equipment.
Inside, Myfanwy and Shantay found the source of the commands among the people chanting. In a room near the end of the hallway, a frantic man moved from one fungus-covered congregant to another, whispering to each. He explained that the congregation had begun the invocation two nights earlier without his order. When he came to check on them, its volume was increasing; he could not leave after his phone was overgrown, and he remained in the house trying to restrain the group.
The man disclosed that he had allowed the congregation to run through its defensive routines once Checquy arrived, anticipating that the organization would send the Rook after the second team was consumed. He said he had prevented the Barghests from being killed by forcing a message into the chanting: he shot one congregant and briefly grafted himself into the system. The effort left him with some of the growth still attached, and he could not make the congregation respond to the emergency instruction phrases he had been given. His appeal for help was compromised by his limited vision through the system’s sensory organs; he had nearly ordered Myfanwy and Shantay cocooned before realizing they were not the people he expected.
Myfanwy’s initial uncertainty about the stranger was consequential. She reached mentally toward his sensory pattern, trying to establish whether he was the head of the Checquy outpost and why he seemed to treat the catastrophe as an operation familiar to them. His explanation instead revealed an insider’s involvement with the congregation and its command system. The person addressing them was Norman Goblet, and his recognition that Myfanwy was not Gestalt exposed the mistaken identity on which his expectations had rested.
Myfanwy’s Intervention
Poppat urged Myfanwy to wait for another Barghest team, arguing that a member of the Court should not enter a manifestation site without an escort. Myfanwy refused and entered in practical clothes rather than the skirt and heels she had worn to the office. The house’s danger therefore met a deliberate choice: she would not leave the investigation to another team while the existing response had already failed repeatedly.
The recorded message within the chanting made the mission personal and pointed. Lydia amplified a tense voice repeating the words, “Send in the Rook.” Myfanwy recognized that the house was calling for her, but the message did not explain what the system wanted or how to stop it. Inside, Goblet remained unable to shut the congregation down through the emergency codes. Myfanwy instead used her ability to map the system through the cultists, tracing how the fungus’s many small connections formed a larger network.
The fungus had spread across Myfanwy and Shantay, but the decisive change came when Myfanwy understood its organization. She disrupted the tiny connections that made the spores part of a coordinated whole; the material on her skin became dead flakes. She then touched Shantay’s hand and used the silver transformation of Shantay’s body to clear the growth from her. Myfanwy sent a further signal through the metal into Shantay’s system, and Shantay sat up and opened her eyes. Their escape from the house was thus also a recovery of their ability to act together.
Resolution and Significance
Myfanwy’s intervention stopped the chanting. She explained afterward that she had disrupted the flow of instructions from the fungus to its hosts, then made the hosts open the small pods in the cellar where Checquy personnel were being held. The immediate result was not merely silence: the network’s control over the congregation was broken, and the captured personnel could be released.
The conversation after the operation took place in a youth hostel lobby, not at the crowded Checquy headquarters or a hotel. Both women had showered after leaving the house, while Bath’s local headquarters was overwhelmed with Pawns, soldiers, and doctors responding to the crisis. Their temporary refuge and Myfanwy’s explanation set the incident’s scale against the practical disorder of its aftermath. She could not state with certainty what the fungus had been meant to accomplish; the evidence was that it was still growing and might spread beyond the house, potentially consuming Bath.
The incident contrasts an institution’s reliance on procedure with the need to read circumstances that procedure cannot master. Successive teams followed established steps—perimeter, cameras, radio contact, emergency codes—yet the manifestation repeatedly defeated those measures. Myfanwy’s solution depended instead on understanding the links between fungus and host and breaking the flow of instructions. The house’s call for the Rook anticipated her arrival, but it did not determine the outcome: the resolution came from her interpretation of the system and her decision to act before further reinforcements arrived.
