Giant soft-bodied animal
The RookThe gigantic mollusks are recurring supernatural threats whose appearances coincide with wartime violence. When they descend on isolated farms to prey on families, the Croatoan must respond; their return during two American wars also reveals the limits of the group’s resources and the value of its ties with the Checquy.
Wartime Threats
During the Revolutionary War, the Croatoan remained neutral rather than fighting for either side. The battles’ carnage and disorder stirred local wildlife, and Croatoan teams were occupied with stopping gigantic mollusks that descended on isolated farmsteads and preyed on families. The creatures made neutrality no escape from the war’s consequences: while the Croatoan avoided combat between human factions, it still had to protect people from dangers amplified by the conflict.
Recurrence and Cooperation
The threat returned during the American Civil War, when violence again excited the gigantic mollusks and they stalked the land. The Croatoan called in reinforcements, showing that the response could require support beyond its own forces. This episode belongs to a wider history of cooperation between the Croatoan and the Checquy, whose later joint campaigns against other supernatural threats strengthened their friendship.
Narrative Significance
The mollusks’ recurring appearances connect human warfare with supernatural danger without making the creatures combatants on either side. Their presence instead creates a parallel crisis for communities exposed to both battle and predation. For the Croatoan, confronting that crisis is part of its protective mission: its operatives may remain outside the war itself, but they cannot remain apart from the harm unfolding around them.
