Harper Callahan Deployment Order
The RookThe Harper Callahan Deployment Order was Myfanwy Thomas’s formal invocation of a nine-year-old student as a Force of Physical Obliteration, an extraordinary authorization considered when the Checquy faced a suspected Grafter weapon that ordinary demolition and fire might not destroy. The order made the decision legally hers—and brought into view the possibility that the child might not survive its execution. In the end, Myfanwy melted the cube herself, canceled the summons, and Callahan returned to his cricket match.
The threat and the proposed response
The order arose after information Myfanwy had shared in the car led Cyrus West to doubt that standard demolitions or a fire agent would work. He proposed combining explosives and napalm with Harper Callahan’s abilities, and asked Myfanwy to authorize the boy’s summons. The proposal was framed as a practical response to the suspected weapon; its extraordinary stakes emerged as soon as Myfanwy considered what those abilities meant in practice.
The purple binder had prepared Myfanwy with information about the Checquy’s deadliest weapons. She knew Callahan was nine, remained at the Estate, and had not yet attained the rank of Pawn. Cyrus replied that the Checquy had presented his abilities as an effective, discreet obliteration option since he was six. Myfanwy understood that the power could leave a crater, making concealment difficult, but her more immediate concern was that using it could kill the boy. Cyrus estimated that Callahan had an even chance of surviving.
Invocation and responsibility
Under pressure from Cyrus, who urged her to think of her responsibility as a Rook to the people of the United Kingdom and not to delay, Myfanwy agreed to summon Callahan. She recited the prescribed formula identifying herself as Myfanwy Alice Thomas, a Rook of the Checquy, and invoking Callahan, ward of the Estate, to serve the unknowing British population with all his strength and capabilities. The archaic wording turned the decision into an official act rather than a merely tactical suggestion.
The formula also transferred responsibility for the operation onto Myfanwy. Only the Rooks, Bishops, and the Lord and Lady of the Checquy could authorize the use on British soil of an agent classified as a Force of Physical Obliteration. There were only three such individuals in the United Kingdom; one was kept in a vault in the Shetland Islands. Deploying an agent at that level required informing the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense, the country’s ruler, and every member of the Checquy Court. As Myfanwy finished speaking, the crew began making the calls and summoning Callahan from the Estate.
Cancellation and significance
Myfanwy accepted that authorizing Callahan might set another terrible consequence in motion, even as she believed the action necessary: her abilities had indicated that the cube was a Grafter weapon. Later, after Myfanwy melted the cube, she asked Ingrid Woodhouse whether the summons had been canceled. Ingrid confirmed that it had been canceled immediately after the cube was melted and that Callahan had returned to his cricket match.
The reversal gives the order its defining tension. The Checquy’s procedure could turn a child’s extraordinary ability into a state-sanctioned weapon, complete with a formal invocation, a chain of notification, and a named authorizer. Yet the deployment did not go ahead: Myfanwy’s own action against the cube removed the immediate need to put Callahan in danger. His return to cricket marks the distance between the institution’s language of obliteration and the ordinary childhood that the order was prepared to interrupt.
