Pawn Cyrus West

The Rook

Pawn Cyrus West is the Checquy site manager overseeing the response to the Reading police-station attack. When Myfanwy arrives, he provides the operational account of the violence and seeks her approval to continue commanding the incident, placing him between the local response and the organization’s senior leadership.

Role at the Reading Incident

A bodyguard identifies Cyrus to Myfanwy as the site manager. She greets him by name, though he takes her hand hesitantly: she recalls that reports have circulated about her making a man stab himself. The brief greeting establishes that Cyrus approaches her with caution, while Myfanwy makes a point of acknowledging the team and inviting him to return to the site’s urgent business.

Cyrus begins his briefing in a droning voice, giving Myfanwy a series of reports about the assault. A man entered the police station, killed officers with his bare hands, endured gunfire, and produced fleshy tentacles that impaled people and drew them into his expanding body. The attack has left the station surrounded by gunfire, screams, and blood; the Reading Checquy’s Situation Response Team has isolated the area, moved onlookers away, and deterred the media.

Command and the Emergency Response

At the end of the account, Cyrus asks Myfanwy’s approval to retain command of the operation. He explains that the Barghests were automatically called in and that Myfanwy was notified because the incident had reached a color-crisis level. The exchange presents him as responsible for coordinating the local response, but also as recognizing the need to defer to Myfanwy’s authority.

Pawn Alan Summerhill supplies the crisis color, chartreuse. Cyrus’s immediate question about who Alan is shows that the response brings together people whose roles are not yet clear to everyone on the team. The scene’s focus remains on managing the emergency: Cyrus’s briefing converts the attackers’ grotesque violence into information Myfanwy can use to assess the threat and decide what to do next.

Connection to John Perry

After Cyrus asks anxiously whether the attack signals another invasion, Myfanwy judges that it is more likely a warning, while acknowledging that the Grafters could exploit any moment of weakness. She presses Cyrus about John Perry, first asking whether he knows the name and then specifying a John Perry from Reading. Cyrus answers that he knows John Perry, but this exchange alone does not establish what he knows about Perry or the nature of their connection. It nevertheless makes his local knowledge relevant to Myfanwy’s effort to understand the attack.
