Pitt

The Rook

Pitt is a vampire whose hatching Eleanor Thurow witnessed while pursuing evidence that vampires existed. Identified later as Alrich’s sibling, he was born a week before Alrich; after Alrich joined the Checquy, Pitt was never heard from again, leaving his fate unknown.

Identity and Background

Pitt was one of the vampires hatched from an egg in a mansion that Eleanor Thurow had entered while investigating reports of vampires. Her account initially described the hatching she witnessed without knowing the newborn’s identity. The later account identifies the vampire as Pitt and establishes his relationship to Alrich: Pitt was Alrich’s sibling, and Alrich was born a week later.

The hatching took place when the Checquy did not officially accept that vampires existed. The organization treated them as fictional creatures derived from Eastern European folklore, despite the anecdotes Thurow had heard while abroad. Her investigation therefore began against institutional skepticism, and the event she witnessed became part of the evidence that contradicted the Checquy’s formal position.

The Hatching

Thurow selected a room containing an egg, used her camouflage ability, and waited. Seven hours later, after sunset, a tall man entered and prepared a fire with aromatic woods and scented oils. The egg then hatched, and the newborn was Pitt. Once Thurow left her hiding place, Pitt turned toward her and moved hesitantly in her direction; she escaped through a concealed window.

The parent vampire remained at the window watching Thurow as she fled. She returned to Francis House, then the Rooks’ headquarters, and reported that she had found a vampire, witnessed another being born, and believed a third would soon hatch. Her superiors reacted only after she identified the neighborhood as one where wealthy and influential families might be at risk. By the time Checquy forces reached the mansion, it was on fire. Thurow was dismissed and went home to record her frustration in her journal.

Relationship to Alrich and Later Fate

Pitt’s clearest established personal connection is his sibling relationship with Alrich. The account places the two births one week apart, but supplies no further information about their upbringing, contact, or relationship after hatching. It does not establish who their parent was beyond Thurow’s observation of an adult vampire present at the scene.

Pitt and Heller, another vampire, were never heard from again. The Checquy did not know whether either remained alive or whether either was still in the United Kingdom. Their disappearance leaves Pitt’s later life and whereabouts unresolved; the available account gives no cause for his absence and does not say whether he encountered Alrich again.

Narrative Significance

Pitt’s hatching links an intimate family fact to the Checquy’s larger, uncertain history with vampires. The organization’s skepticism delayed its response to Thurow’s report, while the fire at the mansion erased the immediate scene before officials could investigate it. Later, even after Alrich had become a long-serving Checquy member and a major source of the organization’s knowledge about vampires, Pitt remained an unanswered question. His existence is established, but his fate—and the origins of the vampire eggs—are not.
