The First Disguise

Becoming John Springer
A Borrowed Identity
Ben buys false identification papers from Molie and adopts the name John Griffen Springer. The disguise offers mobility but cannot erase the social habits that reveal his origin.
Flight from Harding
He crosses The Canal and reaches the airport, discovering that speed and anonymity are his only immediate defenses.
New York Refuge

The Brant Hotel
Temporary Shelter
Ben reaches New York City and checks into the Brant Hotel. The room is clean but emotionally sterile, offering concealment rather than safety.
The Required Tapes
He records the first Running Man tape clips while hiding his face. Even obedience to the program’s rules feels like an act of surveillance against himself.
Boston Departure

Toward Boston
Leaving the Den
Ben concludes that the Hunters will search hiding places first. He abandons the Brant Hotel and travels by bus toward Boston under another name.
Fear in Transit
A police pursuit of a thief nearly exposes him. The incident teaches Ben that ordinary public danger and organized pursuit now merge in his perception.
The YMCA Escape

Fire Underground
The Basement Trap
Hunters bracket Ben at the Boston Y.M.C.A. He enters the basement, starts a fire among newspapers, and sabotages the building’s power.
The Sewer Route
He escapes through a storm drain while the oil tank explodes above him. The flight strips away his disguise and leaves him physically marked but still mobile.
The Airfield Ending

Return to Harding
A Deadly Vector
After crossing Maine and reaching Voigt Airfield, Ben hijacks a Lockheed TriStar. The route reverses the logic of flight: escape becomes deliberate approach.
The Network as Destination
He steers toward the Network Games Building rather than toward safety. The chase becomes an assault on the institution that created it.
