The Salt Path

The book gives the walkers two different endings: first Land’s End, which fails to settle their future, and later the completed route, which brings both a home and the difficult task of stopping.

Land’s End Arrives A landmark without closure Ray and Moth reach Land’s End in a violent storm after a long, exhausting first leg. The marker is deserted, the attractions are shut, and there is no ceremony to transform the moment into a clear conclusion. They ask whether this is really the end. The question exposes that a geographic endpoint cannot answer what the couple should do with their lives.

Choosing to Continue Refusing an easy departure A bus offers to take the couple away, but Ray and Moth remain near the coast and continue walking east. The choice preserves their freedom even though they are cold, wet, and short of money. Going beyond the landmark turns the end into a new beginning. Turning North at the Lizard Direction becomes unavoidable At Lizard Point, the couple reach the southernmost point and recognize that every further step will be northward. They must begin to think about winter and a future beyond the coast. Ray’s sense of belonging has changed, but the practical question of shelter cannot be postponed indefinitely. The geographical turn makes the life decision visible.

The Second Endpoint Completion comes closer After restarting from Poole, Ray and Moth walk toward the point where their earlier journey stopped. The last pages of the guidebook make the approaching finish physically visible. This time, the endpoint is connected to a real housing offer and a student plan. The journey has acquired a possible future beyond itself.

Stopping with Hope The path ends without erasing change Ray and Moth finish the route knowing that life indoors will bring new uncertainties. They have a possible flat and a plan, but no guarantee about illness or long-term finances. Unlike the first ending, this one can hold both completion and continuation. The couple stop walking because they have found somewhere from which to begin again.
