Flower’s Barrow

The Salt Path

Flower’s Barrow is a steep, grass-covered rise encountered on the coastal path, its demanding ascent turning the landscape into a direct test of the walkers’ strength. Reaching its summit brings a broad view across Dorset and westward along the chalk cliffs towards Lulworth.

Setting and Landscape

The cliffs around Worbarrow and Mupe Bay appear white against an unusually turquoise sea in the early sun. From this coast, the path rises sharply up Flower’s Barrow: in the heat, the grass is dry and crisp underfoot, yet slippery enough to make the ascent feel more suited to crawling than walking.

The Ascent and Its Reward

The walkers finally reach the top, gasping, and find the view opening north across Dorset’s rolling hills and valleys and west along the white cliffs towards Lulworth. The panorama answers the strain of the climb with a sudden expansion of scale; the hill is both an obstacle on the route and a vantage point from which its surrounding country becomes legible.

Place in the Journey

Flower’s Barrow is described as a sharp reminder of the coastal path’s true character. Its steep ascent interrupts the walkers’ progress and makes the route’s physical demands unmistakable, while the view from the summit gives that effort a landscape-wide reward.
