The Perseid meteor shower

The Salt Path

The Perseid meteor shower appears during Ray and Moth’s late-summer stay at the ocean’s edge, where its profusion of shooting stars gives the passing days a striking nocturnal marker. In the account, the shower belongs as much to their experience of time as to the night sky: against the darkness, they are resting and moving through days that seem suspended from ordinary life.

Seasonal Appearance

After days of changing weather, the nights are described as dark and lit by pinpoints of light and shooting stars in profusion. The narration identifies them as the late-summer Perseids, making the shower a specific seasonal presence rather than an unspecified display in the sky.

Life at the Ocean’s Edge

The meteor-filled nights are part of a stretch in which Ray and Moth gather water from a rain-fed stream, wash and drink, and continue walking and swimming because Moth should not remain still for too long. Yet they are also rested: the combination of activity and repose leaves them feeling strong and peaceful at the ocean’s edge.

Narrative Significance

Set beside the recurring movement of tide and weather, the Perseids help define this period as both part of the natural cycle and outside ordinary time. Their appearance contributes to the couple’s sense of being held at the coast, close to time even as daily life seems briefly suspended.
