Moth considered university after concluding that he could not return to physical work. Having spent much of his life in the environment, he believed he had skills he could pass on and began to imagine teaching as a second career. His proposed path was to earn a degree at a Cornwall campus associated with the University of Plymouth, then complete teacher training elsewhere. Student accommodation, he hoped, might provide an affordable base while they began again.

Application and uncertainty

Moth made an application, completed a Skype interview, and was accepted. The prospect was tied to practical questions as well as ambition: he and Ray applied for student finance, and the loan could provide a reliable income on which two people might live until Ray found work. Their credit history did not prevent them from receiving that support. Still, they postponed a firm decision while they waited to learn what would happen to their accommodation on the farm. Leaving the security of a roof to return to homelessness remained a serious risk, and Moth’s pain and deterioration made the demands of study uncertain.
