Doordarshan
The Satanic VersesDoordarshan is identified in the novel through a conspicuous act of non-coverage: it does not report a large, peaceful human-chain demonstration in Mumbai. The omission turns a public event into what organizers’ critics call a non-event, revealing the power of broadcast silence to shape what counts as news.
Role in Public Information
The evidence presents Doordarshan as a television-news outlet whose coverage matters to the public visibility of political events. It does not establish the organization’s broader policies or reporting record; its significance here comes from a particular omission and the contrast between what happened in the streets and what reached viewers.
The Human-Chain Demonstration
Thousands of men and women joined hands in an unbroken chain running from one end of the city to the other. Organizers gave the signal at eight in the morning, and an hour later, as rush-hour traffic reached its peak, the crowd began to disperse. The event was generally orderly, with only a few minor skirmishes reported in the Mazagaon district. Observers from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) reported the continuous chain, and the demonstration’s scale and peaceful message made its later absence from television especially striking.
Omission and Its Consequences
Doordarshan’s evening television news carried no report of the demonstration. All India Radio omitted it too, as did most of the government-supporting language press. Only one English-language daily and one Sunday paper covered the event. The contrast was not between an event and no event, but between a demonstration witnessed by thousands and its near-erasure from widely heard and watched news.
Zeeny Vakil had anticipated the silence, describing the demonstration as a Communist show that would therefore be treated officially as a non-event. In this episode, Doordarshan’s omission helps expose how control over circulation can narrow the public record: the human chain existed in the streets, yet its reach beyond them was sharply limited.
