Gateway of India
The Satanic VersesThe Gateway of India serves as the southern anchor of a proposed human chain across Mumbai: a demonstration meant to make national integration visible across a city divided by communal conflict. Its role in the plan is geographical and political, linking the landmark to a chain intended to reach the city’s outer northern suburbs.
The proposed citywide chain
At a planning meeting attended by Salahuddin Chamchawala, organizers discussed forming a human chain from the Gateway of India to Mumbai’s outer northern suburbs. The scale of the route would connect the city’s southern starting point with its northern edge, turning the chain into a public display of solidarity rather than a gathering confined to one site.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) had recently organized a successful human chain in Kerala, which served as a precedent. George Miranda cautioned that Mumbai would be a different setting: the Shiv Sena was in control, and the route would pass through areas such as Mazagaon where organizers anticipated harassment and attacks.
Organizers, risks, and preparations
Zeeny Vakil explained that the demonstration was needed because communal violence was escalating. With Meerut the latest in a series of deadly incidents, organizers wanted to show that forces opposed to disintegration were also at work. The route beginning at the Gateway of India thus belonged to a larger effort to make that opposition public across the city.
The plan remained at the organizational stage in the scene. Participants discussed how many people each could bring, where to assemble, and what food, drink, and first-aid supplies to carry. These practical arrangements sat alongside the acknowledged risks of police obstruction and mob violence, especially along sections of the route identified as Shiv Sena strongholds.
Narrative significance
The Gateway of India matters here as the designated point from which a city-spanning gesture of national integration would begin. The proposed chain sets a collective, connective action against the forces of communal division; its length and route make the city itself the arena of that political claim. The account establishes the demonstration as a plan and records its purpose, logistics, and dangers, without stating whether the chain was ultimately formed.
