Lat
The Satanic VersesLat is one of three daughters who appear in Gibreel Farishta’s early dreams, where she helps turn a vision of Shaitan’s fall into a promise of mischief. Her role is brief but pointed: alongside Manat and Uzza, she belongs to a chorus that knows a trick is in store for Gibreel and a businessman.
Appearance in Gibreel’s Dreams
In one of Gibreel’s early dreams, Shaitan reaches for a branch of the lote-tree beneath the Throne, misses it, and falls. He survives the fall and goes on singing seductive verses. Lat appears with Manat and Uzza as part of his backing group, presented as his daughters.
Role in the Vision
The three daughters laugh together and signal that they have a trick planned for Gibreel and the businessman. The dream does not reveal the trick itself; it leaves Lat’s part within the scene as that of a knowing accomplice whose presence gives the vision a teasing, anticipatory edge.
