Mirza Saeed rescues Ayesha and the others in Sarang
The Satanic VersesMirza Saeed rescues Ayesha and the others in Sarang when a hostile mob blocks the pilgrims’ route. As a downpour breaks the drought, he drives into the threatened street and, with Sri Srinivas and Osman, gets Ayesha and Mishal Akhtar into his Mercedes-Benz. The intervention saves them from the immediate confrontation but leaves the marital and religious disagreement between Saeed and Mishal sharply alive.
The blockade and the storm
A mob opposing the pilgrimage had blocked the bicycle-repairers’ street with wrecked bicycles, setting up a barricade as Ayesha and the pilgrims entered the northern sector. Ayesha walked toward the crossroads without appearing to acknowledge the threat beyond it. Then an immense downpour began. The rain broke the drought too late to save the crops, and some pilgrims interpreted its timing as divine protection for Ayesha and her followers.
Saeed’s intervention
In the confusion, a second sound like a trumpet came from Saeed’s Mercedes-Benz station wagon. He had driven at speed through narrow side streets, knocking over goods and street displays, until he reached the road just north of the barricade. After accelerating toward the crossroads, he braked; Sri Srinivas and Osman jumped out and pulled Mishal and Ayesha into the car. Saeed drove away before the people nearby could clear the water from their eyes.
Conflict in the car
The rescue left Mishal and the others piled together inside the vehicle. From the bottom of the heap, Mishal angrily called Saeed a saboteur and traitor. He answered sarcastically that martyrdom was too easy and asked whether she wanted to see the ocean open. His remark keeps the rescue’s meaning unsettled: Saeed has removed Mishal and Ayesha from immediate danger, but he has not persuaded Mishal to accept his actions or abandon the pilgrimage. The scene turns a threatened confrontation into an escape, without reconciling the people it carries away.
