Mount Everest

The Satanic Verses

Mount Everest matters in the novel less as a directly depicted setting than as a mountain carried into domestic life through Alleluia Cone’s ascent and the objects that commemorate it. Its remembered height and achievement contrast with a later climb on a modest local summit, while the destruction of Alleluia’s climbing keepsakes turns the mountain into a measure of Gibreel’s vengeance and her resolve to leave him.

The mountain and Alleluia’s ascent

Alleluia is identified as an Everest conqueror, and her connection to the mountain is made concrete through a whittled memento of her conquest of Chomolungma, given to her by Pemba. The narrative does not recount the ascent itself in these scenes; instead, the achievement persists through the object and through the identity it records. Mount Everest thus enters the present as an accomplishment whose meaning is preserved in memory and keepsakes.

A local climb in contrast

At the countryside retreat, Gibreel proposes climbing a nearby summit, which the narration calls the local Top. Alleluia declines, though Saladin recognizes that returning to the countryside has brought her joy. Gibreel goes up with Saladin, and from the summit he scans the valley through field glasses. This modest climb is distinct from Alleluia’s Everest conquest: the mountain’s stature is invoked through her reputation, while the action on the page takes place on a local rise in the rain.

Keepsakes and destruction

Alleluia’s apartment contains several surrogate Himalayas: an ice Everest in her freezer and parachute-silk peaks above her bed, alongside Pemba’s carved memento of her Chomolungma conquest. When she returns, she finds that Gibreel has destroyed them all, thawing the ice mountain, tearing down the fabric peaks, and hacking the memento to pieces with a small axe. The damaged keepsakes make the remembered mountain part of a present rupture: Gibreel’s act destroys not Everest itself but the domestic forms through which Alleluia had kept her achievement close. She decides she will not take him back, then calls Saladin to tell him Gibreel is gone.
