The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
The Satanic VersesThe Marriage of Heaven and Hell is an old, long-unopened book belonging to Alleluia Cone, whose younger self filled it with underlinings, marginal marks, exclamations, and questions. When Gibreel Farishta reads from it, the volume becomes more than a text: its annotations and concealed photograph bring Alleluia’s past into an intimate present, joining speculation about sensuality and apocalypse to the grief surrounding her sister Elena Cone.
The Annotated Copy
Alleluia’s marks preserve her earlier engagement with Blake’s writing, though the book had remained unopened for a long time. Gibreel turns through it and selects passages for her, drawing attention to its treatment of sensual enjoyment, the world’s eventual destruction by fire, and the vanity of angels. The words are not merely encountered as general propositions: his reading makes the younger Alleluia’s annotations newly visible to both of them.
Elena’s Photograph
A photograph of Elena Cone has been pressed between the pages. Gibreel finds it while reading and hands it to Alleluia, who identifies her sister and asks him to put the image back where he found it. Later, he places the photograph beside the book’s image of the Regenerated Man. The volume thus holds together two kinds of image: Blake’s illustrated figure and the private likeness of a dead woman whose memory Alleluia says they rarely discuss.
Apocalypse and Unspoken Grief
The flyleaf records a chronology linking the creation of the world to a date in 4004 BC and estimating the apocalypse for 1996. Gibreel connects that note to the book’s reflections on sensual enjoyment and observes that, by the recorded calculation, time remains. Alleluia signals that she does not want him to continue, and he stops. The exchange shows the book’s double force in the scene: it invites playful interpretation while opening onto a loss that Alleluia does not wish to revisit. Its annotations, apocalyptic dates, and hidden photograph make it a material record of interests and grief that had remained closed away.
