The escape from the sanatorium and detention centre
The Satanic VersesThe escape from the sanatorium and detention centre turns Saladin Chamcha’s confinement into a collective breakout. What begins with his private decision to stand with the Manticore and a wolf becomes a carefully organized flight involving inmates from the sanatorium and detainees held behind the wire nearby; Saladin escapes alongside Hyacinth Phillips into the London night.
Background and Preparation
With Pamela still absent, Saladin tells the Manticore and the wolf that he is with them. The declaration marks a shift from his isolation toward solidarity with the beings confined around him, though he has no role among the escape’s planners. By the time the breakout begins some nights later, Hyacinth’s ministrations have nearly emptied his lungs of slime, making it possible for him to run.
The Coordinated Breakout
The escape is organized on a substantial scale across the sanatorium and the neighboring Detention Centre. Saladin waits beside his bed as instructed, rather than helping direct events. Hyacinth brings him the signal, and together they run out of the ward, past several bound and gagged men who had been their guards. Beyond them, figures move through the cold, moonlit night: people partly made of plants, giant insects, brick, or stone, alongside a man with a rhinoceros horn in place of his nose and women with giraffe-long necks.
Through the Fence
At the edge of the Detention Centre compound, the Manticore and other sharp-toothed mutants are waiting beside large holes they have bitten through the enclosing fence. The escapees pass through and go their separate ways. The breakout thus frees a crowd of prisoners without making them a unified band for what comes next: they disperse, with no hope, but without shame.
Flight Toward London
Saladin and Hyacinth run side by side, his goat-hooves clattering on the hard pavement. Hyacinth directs him east, and the movement of his own footsteps replaces the tinnitus in his ears. Their route takes them along the low roads toward London town. The episode’s release is both bodily and provisional: the wire has been breached, but the escapees leave separately, carrying their altered bodies and uncertain futures with them.
