The fire this time
The Satanic Verses“The fire this time” is Sewsunker Pinkwalla’s declaration at the climax of a recurring spectacle at Club Hot Wax: a doll is strapped into Hell’s Kitchen, the club’s glass-fronted microwave oven, and melted before an ecstatic crowd. The phrase marks the destruction as both entertainment and a public ritual of release.
The phrase in the club
After the customers chant for “Meltdown,” Pinkwalla presents the night’s chosen offering: a doll styled with a permanent wave, pearls, and a blue suit. The crowd chants “Maggie-maggie-maggie” and “Burn-burn-burn” as the figure is strapped into the Hot Seat and the oven is switched on. The doll crumples from the inside out until it becomes a puddle; Pinkwalla then tells the audience, “The fire this time,” before the music resumes.
Repetition and release
The destruction is not a one-off performance: the doll is selected at least three times a week. Pinkwalla’s phrase gives the scene its closing beat, naming the fire as this night’s spectacle while the crowd’s sigh of ecstasy and the return of the music complete the ritual. Its force comes from that contrast between the doll’s reduction to formlessness and the club’s quick restoration of its celebratory rhythm.
