Calum becomes the vampire prince

The Secret Vampire

Callum's transformation is the foundational event that turns an unknown human survivor of the Human–Vampire War of Cape Town into the adopted prince of the Vampire royal family. It joins the violence of a collapsing war to the intimate ritual of royal succession: after being pursued by an unknown spirit, struck unconscious, and left without a visible past, he awakens in the household of Vlad and Carmilla and receives a new identity, a new species, and a place within the dynasty.

War, Flight, and the Threshold of Death

The event is rooted in the war that had made Cape Town a landscape of fear. Ten years earlier, Vampires had dominated the town under their king and queen, while humans were confined to their homes at night because they feared being killed or fed upon. The human mayor answered this oppression by declaring war on the Vampires, and the first attacks became a bloodbath in which the more powerful Vampires repeatedly defeated human forces. Human resistance eventually turned to garlic bombs and holy water, weapons associated with the established vulnerabilities of Vampires. Although the Vampires initially avoided them through speed and stealth, a giant garlic bomb and a barrage of holy water changed the balance, killing or driving back many Vampires and making a peace agreement based on no hunting and no biting appear possible.

Against this public catastrophe, Callum's transformation is first presented as a private mystery. A young man runs from the chaos while a fast, unknown spirit pursues him. He slips, strikes his head, briefly opens his eyes, and loses consciousness. When he awakens, he sees two shadowy figures and momentarily believes that he is dead. The battlefield therefore functions as the threshold through which his former life disappears: the war destroys the world he knew, while the injury separates him from any recoverable human identity.

Awakening in the Vampire Household

Callum awakens inside a room decorated in an old-fashioned style, but the first sign that his former human existence has ended is not a spoken declaration: he looks into a mirror and sees no reflection. The absence makes his surroundings and his own body equally uncertain. A voice orders him downstairs, where he encounters a heavily pregnant woman in a long, old-style dress and crown and a man who appears more than a century old without showing the signs of aging. The man identifies himself as Vlad, the Vampire King, and introduces his wife as Carmilla. Callum asks why he has been brought there, but Vlad answers that Callum is dead and will become their son and their legacy. The pronouncement converts an unexplained rescue into an act of dynastic adoption, replacing the lost identity of the unconscious stranger with a role inside the Vampire royal family.

The Birth of the Prince

The transformation becomes explicit during Carmilla’s labor. A human doctor delivers a girl, but Carmilla dies in the process, turning the household’s promised succession into an immediate encounter with death. Vlad bites Carmilla’s neck, and her eyes open again, confirming that vampirism can reverse the boundary between death and continued existence. When the terrified doctor recognizes that the household consists of Vampires and tries to flee, Vlad commands Callum to stop her. Callum corners the woman and drains her after biting her heavily, participating in violence before he has fully understood the identity imposed on him.

Vlad then names the rescued young man Callum and presents the newborn girl as their little princess while calling Callum their prince. Blood marks the completion of his entry into the family: Callum wipes it from his mouth, and his eyes change from blue to red. The alteration is therefore both physical and political. He does not merely become a Vampire; he is absorbed into the royal household as Vlad and Carmilla’s adopted son, while the newborn girl occupies the position of princess. The servant’s instruction to dispose of the doctor’s body further places Callum inside a concealed supernatural order whose survival depends on secrecy and control.

Legacy, Relationships, and Narrative Significance

Callum’s transformation continues to govern his relationships long after the original scene has ended. Although Vlad and Carmilla adopt him as their son and present him as their prince, his position in the household is emotionally real as well as dynastic. Years later, Callum worries that Carmilla may love him less because he was once human and because he challenges the family’s practice of feeding on humans. Carmilla rejects that fear, affirming that she loves Callum and Elise equally. His place in the royal family is therefore defined through care and loyalty rather than biological descent alone, even though the transformation also makes him part of the succession.

The event also establishes the conflict between inherited Vampire custom and Callum’s memory of human life. During his duel with Vlad, Callum forces his father to sign a contract promising that Vampires will stop feeding on humans and that humans and Vampires can coexist peacefully. His demand that Vlad’s word be backed by a signature contrasts with the unquestioned violence of Callum’s first night, when he was ordered to kill the human doctor. The adopted prince consequently becomes an agent of change within the kingdom: the identity imposed on him through vampiric adoption does not erase his human past, but gives that past political force.

Callum’s later bond with Celeste further transforms the meaning of his beginning. Celeste learns that Vampires are real and receives a wooden stake after dreaming that Callum is a Vampire, while Callum’s attachment to her becomes entangled with the supernatural idea of soulmates. Their relationship survives suspicion, grief, and revenge, including Callum’s belief that Celeste caused Carmilla’s death and his attempt to attack Celeste in the hospital. Once Samara’s manipulation and responsibility for Carmilla’s murder are exposed, Callum and Celeste reconcile, become engaged, and marry. Three years later, Callum has succeeded Vlad as Vampire King, lives with Celeste, and raises their son Silas. The frightened, nameless fugitive from the war has thus become the ruler of the Vampire kingdom, but his final position is presented not as a return to the old order: it is a royal future shaped by family, coexistence, and the memory of having once been human.
