Celeste's Special Gift

The Secret Vampire

Celeste's Special Gift distinguishes Celeste from an ordinary human and ultimately gives her a decisive role in exposing Samara and ending the spell over Vlad. Its nature is disclosed in stages: first as a suspicion requiring investigation, then as an identity revealed by Carmilla, and finally as a power Celeste can use at a cost. The story confirms several striking effects without defining a complete system for how the gift works.

Discovery and Investigation

The first inquiry into Celeste's unusual nature grows out of questions about Callum. Samara researches what Carmilla has asked her and wonders whether Callum is a true vampire or only a fleshing, noting that only people who are part vampire and part witch cannot be compelled. Carmilla answers that Callum is her son, then expresses a separate suspicion: Celeste may be hiding a secret. Samara proposes testing that suspicion with a DNA sample, saying a piece of Celeste's hair would be enough.

Carmilla tries to bring the investigation closer to its subject. She suggests that Callum invite Celeste over, but he puts her off because of his exams. Carmilla then resolves to find a way to get Celeste's DNA to the witch, hoping to establish whether the girl is special. Her interest is thus neither an abstract curiosity nor a conclusion based on a demonstrated power; it begins as a question about what Celeste is, to be answered by evidence.

At Cape Town College, an unexplained incident adds to the mystery. Celeste offers Callum part of her sandwich, and his hand burns when he takes it. Callum runs off, then examines the injury; by the time Celeste finds him, his skin has healed and his hand appears normal. She is left wondering both why contact with the sandwich hurt him and how the injury disappeared so quickly. The scene establishes an uncanny disturbance around their contact, but does not explain it or explicitly identify it as the operation of Celeste's gift.

Carmilla's Revelation

Samara later brings Carmilla a document about Celeste. Its contents stun Carmilla: according to Samara, Celeste is special and cannot be touched or harmed. Carmilla's reaction turns the report into a personal fear as well as a discovery; she wonders whether her son could be in danger. Samara reassures her that Celeste is special, then Carmilla privately considers a different possibility—that Celeste could be her son's mate.

The report leaves important questions open. It gives Carmilla a firm-sounding description of Celeste's exceptional status, but does not explain the source or mechanics of that protection. Nor does the story present the phrase as a straightforward guarantee of physical invulnerability: Celeste is later kidnapped, bound, and left traumatized. The evidence therefore supports a distinction between the report's claim that she cannot be harmed and the dangers she demonstrably suffers, without supplying a rule that reconciles them.

The clearest explanation comes in a dream after Celeste has been through severe trauma. She finds herself in a forest and sees Samara killing her mother. Carmilla appears and tells her to be brave because Callum needs her. When Celeste insists that she is ordinary and cannot defeat Samara, Carmilla contradicts her: Celeste is special, has a gift, and is Callum's soulmate. Carmilla also shows her a memory from her childhood, where Celeste sees her younger self. She tells Celeste she will let her go and that she must help Callum, but leaves her with a riddle whose meaning Celeste does not understand.

This dream links the gift to Celeste's identity, her past, and her relationship with Callum, but it does not provide a technical explanation. Carmilla's revelation is personal and purposeful: it reframes Celeste's apparent ordinariness as an incomplete understanding of herself, while directing her toward a task she has not yet mastered.

Manifestations and Limits

The gift becomes unmistakably active when Samara's control over Vlad is broken. As Vlad is about to marry Samara, Celeste closes her eyes and concentrates. Vlad feels a tingling sensation; when Celeste opens her eyes, he looks around as though returned to himself and asks what is happening. He recognizes his loyalty to Carmilla, and Samara realizes that her spell has been broken. The sequence connects Celeste's power to a tangible change in another person, though it does not spell out precisely how Celeste produces it.

Celeste's power also makes the past visible. She creates a portal to show what happened, but begins to weaken and collapses, with Isabelle and Damien holding her up. The magical revelation brings Samara's hidden crimes into the open: a familiar face uses a spell on Samara, who confesses to killing Carmilla and Celeste's mother, seeking power, and pretending to be Hannah in order to divide Celeste and Callum. Celeste's gift therefore does more than establish that she is special; it helps turn concealed history into evidence that others can witness. The scene also makes the cost visible: sustaining the revelation leaves her weak.

After Samara attacks, Celeste uses what little energy remains to trap her in an hourglass. This act turns the gift from a means of perceiving or disrupting magic into direct magical force. Samara is contained and taken to the dungeon, while Celeste collapses and has to rest. Her power is decisive but not effortless: in the story's clearest displays, using it is followed by physical exhaustion or collapse.

Role in the Story

The gift's disclosure changes the meaning of earlier uncertainty. Carmilla's search for a DNA sample, her concern for Callum, and her speculation about a soulmate are gradually answered not by a single explanation but by Celeste's increasingly consequential actions. The childhood memory shown in the dream suggests that Celeste's exceptional identity predates her conscious understanding of it; the later portal and hourglass make that identity public and consequential.

The gift also joins emotional revelation to supernatural action. Celeste is told that Callum needs her, but she is not merely assigned a role through that relationship: she breaks Vlad's spell, exposes Samara, and contains her. At the same time, the story keeps the gift partly mysterious. It establishes that Celeste is special, associates her with Callum as his soulmate, and depicts several forms of power, but does not name a single governing principle or clarify every limit. Its importance lies in that combination of withheld explanation and unmistakable effect: Celeste's power turns her from an apparent bystander to Samara's schemes into an active force capable of changing what the others can know and do.
