Damien and Susie's Relationship

The Secret Vampire

Damien and Susie's relationship develops from mutual friction into a cautious, explicitly limited offer of friendship. Their encounters are shaped first by Susie's belief that she and Callum belong together, then by Damien's insistence that Callum is Celeste's soulmate; only after Susie turns away from that rivalry does Damien ask her out, and she sets the terms as friendship.

Early Tension Around Callum

Damien's clearest early confrontation with Susie occurs at the hospital, where he finds her asking whether Callum is there. He answers coldly that she and Callum will never happen. Susie insists that she loves Callum and calls him her “sexyman,” while Damien's eyes turn red as he angrily tells her that Callum and Celeste are soulmates. His reaction makes clear that he is not treating Susie's pursuit as harmless flirtation: he sees her fixation as a denial of Celeste and Callum's bond, and his blunt rebuke leaves Susie frightened.

Rivalry and Its De-escalation

The conflict resurfaces when Susie confronts Celeste on the way to the castle, accusing her of trying to take Callum away. Damien again reminds Susie that Celeste and Callum are soulmates. This time, however, the confrontation does not end with his warning alone. Celeste tells Susie that she loves her as a sister and has no intention of coming between her and anyone; Susie begins to cry, recalls their mother and Brianna, and apologizes for her behavior. Damien then asks Susie to help stop Samara. Susie agrees, marking a practical change in their interactions: she joins the group rather than continuing to oppose Celeste over Callum.

A Friendship Offered on Susie's Terms

After the conflict with Samara, Susie hugs Celeste and turns to leave. Damien stops her and acknowledges that she may still be wishing for a “sexyman,” but tells her that he thinks she is beautiful. When Susie asks whether he is trying to ask her out, Gabriel supplies the interpretation Damien has not quite voiced. Susie agrees, but specifies that it would be as friends. Damien accepts her condition without pressing for more, and they share a smile. The exchange gives their relationship a gentler possibility, but it establishes a friendly invitation rather than a declared romance.

What the Ending Leaves Open

The story does not develop Damien and Susie's new understanding into a sustained relationship. In the later time jump, Susie is happily married to Darren. That ending places her future elsewhere and leaves Damien's invitation as a brief, tentative turn in their relationship, not a lasting couplehood confirmed by the narrative.
