Gabriel

The Secret Vampire

Gabriel is Samara's son and one of the story's most unstable figures: he enters as a charming stranger who turns a Halloween celebration into a scene of attempted assault, then reappears as the compromised witness who reveals that Samara is behind Celeste's kidnapping. His significance lies in this reversal. Gabriel is initially aligned with coercion and revenge, yet his recognition that Celeste does not deserve Samara's violence places him against his own mother and makes him indispensable to the rescue effort.

Identity and Introduction

Gabriel first appears at Callum's Halloween party at the Vampire Castle, where he approaches Celeste after she has noticed him watching her. He introduces himself politely, dances with her, and briefly occupies the social role of an attractive new acquaintance. The apparent friendliness quickly becomes a disguise. Gabriel leads Celeste into an empty room, closes the door, compliments her beauty, and tries to kiss her. When she pushes him away and attempts to leave, he forces her onto the bed, pins her arms, and threatens her.

Callum interrupts before Gabriel can carry the assault further. Gabriel responds with defiance rather than remorse, telling Callum that the matter is not over and promising that Callum will pay. The party ends when Callum throws Gabriel down the stairs and orders everyone to leave. Gabriel therefore enters the narrative not as a misunderstood romantic rival but as a direct physical threat to Celeste, with his first major action establishing the coercive behavior that later makes his claims of apology difficult to trust.

Revenge and Manipulation

Gabriel's connection to Samara becomes clear soon afterward. Carmilla has taken a sample of Celeste's hair for DNA testing, and when she brings it to Samara, Gabriel is revealed as the son Samara calls into the room. Samara criticizes him for failing to seduce Celeste at the party, while Gabriel assures her that he already has a revenge plan. His response links the party attack to a continuing intention rather than an isolated loss of control.

Gabriel later approaches Celeste at college and acts apologetic about the Halloween incident, claiming that he was drunk. Celeste immediately identifies the explanation as a lie. Gabriel then attempts to manipulate her memories, extending his earlier physical coercion into supernatural control over her perception. Callum intervenes and orders Celeste away before confronting Gabriel directly. With his eyes turned red, Callum warns Gabriel to stay away from her; Gabriel answers with a smirk and repeats that the conflict is far from over. This encounter presents Gabriel as a shapeshifting threat in the narrative sense: he changes from flirtatious stranger to apologetic manipulator to openly defiant enemy without abandoning his objective of controlling the situation around Celeste.

From Accomplice to Informant

Gabriel's position changes when Celeste is imprisoned by Samara. After Samara has taken Celeste, Gabriel encounters her in the basement and asks what she is doing there. Celeste demands to know why he kidnapped her, but Gabriel's later behavior complicates the assumption that he is the principal captor. When Samara destroys Celeste's phone and orders Gabriel upstairs, he watches her leave and thinks that Celeste does not deserve what is happening to her. The thought marks the first clear break between Gabriel's earlier conduct and his emerging awareness of Samara's cruelty.

Gabriel eventually escapes from his room because he needs to tell Callum where Celeste is. Callum ignores Gabriel's calls, still treating him as an enemy, so Gabriel contacts Damien instead. In the college library, Gabriel asks Callum and Damien to promise that they will not hurt him and explains that he tried to help Celeste escape but Samara stopped him. He identifies Samara as the force behind Celeste's kidnapping and agrees to lead the rescuers to her. His information transforms him from an obstacle into a reluctant guide, although his earlier violence means that the rescue alliance is founded on necessity rather than trust.

Conflict with Samara

Gabriel's opposition to Samara becomes explicit when Hannah brings him into another room and transforms back into Samara. Gabriel recognizes the deception and tells his mother to stop hurting Callum and Celeste. Samara laughs at his resistance and attacks him with a spell, forcing Gabriel to flee after a small explosion. His escape allows him to reach Damien and report that Hannah is Samara, providing another warning about her infiltration and deception.

This confrontation also reveals the limits of Gabriel's independence. He knows Samara's methods and is willing to challenge her, but he remains vulnerable to her magical authority and must escape rather than defeat her. His resistance is therefore practical and urgent, not a completed moral redemption. He can oppose the violence he once helped initiate, yet he cannot simply erase his earlier role or control the power that governs his family.

Relationships and Narrative Role

Gabriel's relationship with Samara is defined by family loyalty, secrecy, and rupture. She treats him as an extension of her plans, criticizes his failure at the party, and later refuses to explain why Celeste has been kidnapped. Gabriel initially accepts the language of revenge, but witnessing Celeste's suffering makes that loyalty unstable. His change does not arise from a detached ethical principle; it emerges through proximity to the consequences of Samara's actions and through his recognition that Celeste is being treated unjustly.

His relationship with Celeste remains marked by contradiction. Gabriel is the person who first isolates and threatens her, and Celeste has reason to fear him even when he later offers information. Yet he becomes one of the few people inside Samara's circle capable of naming the danger and acting against it. The same character who once says he has a revenge plan ultimately seeks contact with Callum and Damien because Celeste needs help. The reversal does not make his earlier conduct disappear; instead, it gives the rescue plot a morally compromised messenger whose testimony matters precisely because he comes from the enemy's household.

Gabriel also functions as a threshold figure between the hostile supernatural world and those trying to protect Celeste. He knows the castle's hidden arrangements, Samara's movements, and the danger of her disguises, but he is neither a reliable ally nor a simple villain. His promises require protection, his information arrives after delay, and his attempt to help Celeste has already failed once. Nevertheless, his disclosures supply the rescuers with the knowledge they need to act, making him a crucial conduit for the plot's shift from suspicion to recognition.

Change and Significance

Gabriel's arc is a compressed movement from predation to partial resistance. At the Halloween party he uses charm as a route to control, responds to rejection with force, and threatens Callum afterward. Soon he participates in a revenge structure connected to Samara and tries to alter Celeste's memories. Later, after seeing Celeste imprisoned and recognizing that she does not deserve the abuse, he risks Samara's anger to seek help, reveals the kidnapping, and resists Samara directly.

The change remains incomplete and dangerous. The story does not present Gabriel's intervention as proof that he has become trustworthy; it presents it as a consequential break in allegiance. He is still shaped by the violence of the household he belongs to, yet he can no longer accept its treatment of Celeste without protest. Gabriel's narrative function is therefore less that of a redeemed hero than of a compromised witness whose movement across the boundary between aggressor and informant exposes how Samara's power operates. His most important act is not defeating her, but making her hidden crime speakable to Callum and Damien.
