Stake-through-the-Heart Rule
The Secret VampireThe Stake-through-the-Heart Rule establishes a specific lethal vulnerability of the Vampires: a wooden stake driven through the heart can kill one. Isabelle teaches Celeste Rodriguez this method, and Celeste later uses it in the hospital, where the targeted Vampire turns to dust. The rule turns an item of supernatural lore into practical knowledge with immediate consequences.
The Rule and Its Weapon
The rule is stated directly when Isabelle explains that Vampires die by a stake to the heart. She gives Celeste a wooden stake after Celeste describes a strange dream in which Callum appears to be a Vampire. Celeste asks why Isabelle did not bring garlic instead; Isabelle dismisses that alternative and identifies the stake as the effective weapon. The exchange distinguishes familiar vampire folklore from the particular vulnerability the story presents as reliable.
Celeste Puts the Rule into Practice
Celeste acts on Isabelle’s warning at the hospital. She finds a nurse unconscious beside the empty bed where Susie had been, and the nurse opens red eyes and hisses at her. Celeste drives the stake into the nurse’s heart; the nurse turns to dust. Celeste wipes away a tear and apologizes, a brief gesture that places emotional weight beside the rule’s decisive physical result.
Threat, Restraint, and Scope
The stake remains a possible defense against a Vampire, not a weapon Celeste uses indiscriminately. Later, when Isabelle offers to stake Susie, Celeste stops her. Susie is a threat in that confrontation, but she is also Celeste’s sister, and Celeste continues trying to reach her rather than treating the rule as permission to kill.
The evidence establishes the stake’s effectiveness through Isabelle’s warning and Celeste’s successful use against the nurse. It does not describe other stakes, failed attempts, or further conditions for the rule. Its clearest narrative function is therefore both practical and ethical: it gives Celeste a way to survive an immediate attack, while her refusal to use it against Susie shows that knowing how to kill a Vampire does not settle whom she is willing to kill.
