“Safety First”

The Seven Dials Mystery

“Safety First” is the motto Superintendent Battle pointedly rejects when Lady Eileen Brent proposes a dangerous course of action. His response turns the expression into a contrast between mere self-preservation and the willingness to accept risk for a purpose.

Battle’s Rejection

Battle first warns Lady Eileen that her proposal is dangerous, emphasizing the danger rather than softening it. When she answers that she has understood and is no fool, he agrees, then explains that he will give her a hint because he has never thought much of the motto “Safety First.” His qualification is not a denial of danger: he has just stressed it. Instead, he challenges the idea that avoiding danger should always take priority.

Meaning in the Exchange

Battle imagines people who spend their lives dodging buses and says that some would be better off being run over and safely put out of the way, because they are no good. The exaggeration gives his rejection its force: caution can become useless when it prevents any consequential action. Coming from Battle’s conventionally presented manner, the remark is startling enough to take Bundle’s breath away. She then asks what hint he intended to give, leaving his offer—and the risk attached to it—open for the conversation to continue.
