Gerald Wade and Loraine Wade

The Seven Dials Mystery

Gerald Wade’s devotion to Loraine Wade gives their relationship both its intimacy and its fatal imbalance. He hoped to marry her, but the confidence he placed in her became a channel through which information about his investigation reached Jimmy Thesiger, to whom Loraine was wholly devoted.

Kinship and Unequal Affection

Though Gerald and Loraine were treated as brother and sister, Loraine was not really his sister. Gerald was devoted to her and, as the investigation later establishes, hoped to marry her. The account offers no evidence that she returned his romantic attachment: her deepest allegiance was to Jimmy Thesiger. Their closeness therefore rested on unequal feelings and different loyalties, even as Gerald trusted her with what he had learned.

Gerald’s Investigation and Confidence

Before the weekend at Chimneys, Gerald had become excited by a discovery and believed he was on the right track. He did not explain his theory to anyone, but he told Ronald Devereux that he was close to making sure of it. He also told Loraine more than he should have. After Gerald died at Chimneys, apparently from an overdose of a sleeping draught, Ronald rejected the explanation and believed that Gerald had been deliberately removed from the way. The account connects Gerald’s private investigation and his confidence in Loraine without specifying exactly what he disclosed to her.

Betrayal and Narrative Consequences

Loraine passed information to Jimmy, whom she was devoted to and would do anything for. That transfer makes Gerald’s affection consequential beyond the private relationship: what he entrusted to Loraine could reach the person whose identity his investigation was approaching. Later, Ronald was also attracted to Loraine and probably warned her against Jimmy; the account presents him as being silenced in turn, dying while trying to alert the Seven Dials that Jimmy was his murderer. The parallel does not establish that Gerald knew Loraine would betray him, but it shows how attachment and confidence repeatedly intersect with the criminal investigation. Gerald’s hope of marriage remains unfulfilled, while the trust underlying that hope becomes part of the chain of disclosure surrounding his death.
