Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar
The Shadow of the WindThe Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar is a landmark in Barcelona that recurs at sharply different moments: as the destination fixed in the gaze of a murdered man, and as a distant sight across the harbour at dawn. Its appearances place personal loss within the wider life of the city, without resolving the mysteries surrounding those who have disappeared or died.
Setting and Appearances
The basilica is seen from the city’s waterfront and across the harbour. In the later scene, dawn gradually brightens the sky while the city wakes; the church emerges from the mist on the far side of the water. The setting makes the building a quiet point of orientation within a changing urban landscape, rather than the site of an extended episode inside the church.
The Body on the Bench
Earlier, a body is found on a bench on Paseo del Borne, its hands crossed over its lap and its face turned toward the basilica. A local resident alerts the police after noticing pigeons pecking at the corpse’s eyes. The dead man is identified as Pedro Sanmartí Monegal, whose neck has been broken. His father-in-law, hearing the news at a nursing home in Bañolas, takes the death as a reason to feel that he can now die in peace. The basilica thus becomes the fixed object of the dead man’s final posture, while the circumstances of his death carry consequences for the living.
The Basilica Across the Harbour
The church returns after a wedding, when Daniel and another speaker remain together in silence, watching reflections on the water. As amber light reaches the sky and Barcelona wakes, they hear the basilica’s distant bells; the building itself is only just becoming visible through the mist. Daniel then asks whether Carax is still somewhere in the city, and receives no answer. The sequence places the basilica amid quiet companionship and unresolved absence, contrasting with its earlier association with a discovered corpse. Across both appearances, it anchors private grief and uncertainty in the continuing presence of Barcelona.
