Julian and Penelope's Romance and the Truth That They Are Siblings
The Shadow of the WindJulian and Penelope’s romance becomes the crisis around which the Aldaya family’s secrets and violence converge. Its decisive revelation—that they are brother and sister—comes only after Miquel has helped Julian leave Barcelona without telling him what happened to Penelope, making the separation an act of protection that also prolongs Julian’s ignorance.
Discovery and confinement
The crisis begins when Señora Aldaya tells Don Ricardo that she has discovered Julian and Penelope together in the governess’s room. Don Ricardo reacts with fury, confronts Penelope, and has her confined in the room that had belonged to Jacinta. He orders the servants and family not to visit her, dismisses Jacinta, and threatens anyone who might maintain contact with her. A doctor examines Penelope in the early hours; Don Ricardo then warns him against speaking about what he has seen.
Jorge Aldaya is troubled not only by the punishment but by the scale of his father’s rage. The doctor’s examination indicates that Penelope may be pregnant, deepening the danger surrounding her confinement. Don Ricardo has Julian expelled from San Gabriel's School and, in collaboration with Antoni Fortuny, arranges for him to be sent into the army, where he intends that Julian should meet an apparently accidental death.
Miquel’s concealment
Jorge tells Miquel what has happened and makes him promise to keep it secret. When Miquel goes to the station on Sunday in 1919 to give Julian his ticket to Paris, he already knows Penelope will not come to their rendezvous. He also understands that telling Julian she is locked away and may be carrying his child would make Julian stay in Barcelona, where Miquel fears he would be destroyed.
Miquel therefore lets Julian believe Penelope may join him later. At the Estacion de Francia, he says goodbye while trying to believe the separation is not final. After Julian disappears, Don Ricardo launches a police search and blames Antoni Fortuny for disrupting their arrangement; Sophie, in turn, is accused by her husband of helping their son escape. Miquel’s role in arranging Julian’s departure remains hidden from everyone except Jorge.
The sibling revelation
Much later, Sophie takes responsibility for the tragedy when Miquel asks about Penelope. She tells him that Julian and Penelope are brother and sister. The revelation changes the meaning of the affair and explains why Don Ricardo’s response exceeded even the fury Jorge could understand at the time.
Don Ricardo had treated Julian as a chosen successor, imagining that he could shape the young man into an image of himself. He failed to see that Julian’s closeness to the family was a pretext for being near Penelope, whom he loved. Discovering the lovers together thus meant more to him than a defiance of authority: he felt betrayed by the person he had favored and humiliated by a relationship whose true kinship he did not understand.
Consequences and significance
Once the doctor confirms that Penelope has been sexually initiated and may be pregnant, Don Ricardo’s anger hardens into hatred. He keeps her isolated and conceals her condition, while arranging Julian’s removal and intended death. The romance is therefore caught between two forms of concealment: Miquel hides Penelope’s imprisonment to get Julian out of Barcelona, and Don Ricardo hides the family’s crisis behind threats and coercion.
The delayed disclosure of the siblings’ relationship makes the episode a plot hinge rather than a simple forbidden romance. Julian’s departure is made possible by Miquel’s silence, but that same silence leaves him ignorant of Penelope’s fate. Don Ricardo’s attempt to control the lovers instead begins his own destruction and accompanies the collapse of the Aldaya empire. Sophie’s later admission finally names the family secret that had shaped the separation from the start.
