Tomas Aguilar—Beatriz Aguilar

The Shadow of the Wind

Tomas Aguilar and Beatriz Aguilar are siblings, and Tomas’s response to her disappearance makes him both her family’s spokesman and Daniel’s immediate antagonist. At the door, he tells Daniel that Beatriz is gone; as Daniel presses for an explanation, Tomas reveals that she has left home, that their parents and the police have been searching for her, and that she is pregnant. The scene establishes a relationship defined by familial protection under pressure: Tomas is furious with Daniel, but his account also makes clear that Beatriz protected Daniel from her father by refusing to give his name.

Identity and Family Bond

The evidence presents Tomas and Beatriz as brother and sister. Their bond becomes visible through Tomas’s knowledge of Beatriz’s movements and his refusal to let Daniel approach her. He knows that she left home and has not been found, and he relays both what happened after she returned from seeing Daniel and what the family has done since. He is not simply an intermediary: his anger and warning place him between Daniel and his missing sister.

The Confrontation with Daniel

When Daniel arrives seeking Beatriz, Tomas meets him with a fixed, hostile stare. Daniel says he will not leave without speaking to her, even if Tomas attacks him, but Tomas answers that his sister is not there. Daniel calls out to Beatriz inside the apartment; no one responds. Tomas then orders him to leave and not return, explaining that their father has sworn to kill him and that Tomas will not intervene to stop his father.

The exchange turns on a painful imbalance of knowledge. Daniel arrives without knowing where Beatriz is or what has happened to her. Tomas first gives him the bare fact of her absence, then, after Daniel insists, explains that she has been missing for two days and that her parents and the police are searching for her. The information makes the family’s fear and Daniel’s exclusion part of the same crisis: Tomas tells him what he needs to know while refusing him access to Beatriz.

Beatriz’s Disappearance and Tomas’s Protection

Tomas recounts that Beatriz returned home after seeing Daniel and that their father was waiting for her. Their father struck her, but Beatriz did not reveal Daniel’s name. Tomas holds Daniel responsible for the danger surrounding his sister and tells him that he does not deserve her; at the same time, his account confirms that Beatriz chose not to expose Daniel despite the consequences at home.

That protection does not make Tomas forgiving. He does not offer Daniel a way to find Beatriz, and he warns that their father intends to kill him. His own position is starkly bounded: he will not stop their father, but he is also the one who conveys Beatriz’s circumstances and her refusal to name Daniel. The sibling relationship therefore comes into view through both care and conflict, with Tomas guarding Beatriz’s absence rather than resolving it.

The Pregnancy Revelation and Its Consequences

Tomas finally tells Daniel that Beatriz is pregnant and accuses him of knowing—or of having failed to understand—the situation. Daniel’s immediate response is shock; the revelation changes the meaning of the search from a missing-person crisis alone to a family emergency with consequences for Beatriz and her future. Tomas supplies the fact that Daniel did not know, while expressing no sympathy for his ignorance.

The scene ends without a reconciliation between the men or a reunion with Beatriz. Tomas remains angry and protective, Daniel leaves with the knowledge that Beatriz has disappeared and is pregnant, and their father’s threat still hangs over the encounter. The relationship between the siblings is thus shown indirectly, through Tomas’s testimony: Beatriz has been harmed within the family, has kept Daniel’s identity secret, and remains the person Tomas’s warnings are meant to shield from further intrusion.
