The Operation Unravels

This flow follows the operational conflict as Lawson’s need for secrecy collides with deliberate exposure, changing orders, and an unpredictable target.

An Inherited Doctrine

A Familiar Rulebook Mission Expectations Lawson approaches the assignment with the operational maxim “Get in, get it done, and get home.” His past work has taught him to depend on clear objectives, personal initiative, and a direct route from target identification to completion. A Warning About Afghanistan Niles challenges that confidence, emphasizing that the country’s terrain has defeated outside powers and can rewrite familiar rules. The warning establishes an early conflict between Lawson’s self-reliant method and an environment in which reliable information and control will be scarce.

A Cover Under Strain

A Guide With Limits Haydar’s Intelligence Role Haydar explains that his job is to place Lawson on the trail, then disappear to protect his cover as a member of Ferrets. Lawson must rely on someone whose continued usefulness depends on avoiding precisely the attention the mission may create. An Uneasy Division of Labor Their arrangement gives Lawson local knowledge without giving him full control of the pursuit. The plan depends on Haydar remaining unexposed and on his intelligence being timely, limits that become more consequential as the operation moves closer to the border.

The Cover Story Becomes a Signal

Buying Weapons in Public A Compromised Entrance Lawson’s purchase at Shaba Used Auto Parts Market is designed to look conspicuous enough to spread word of a foreign gun buyer. The tactic trades quiet entry for a rumor that may unsettle the Shepherd’s clients and make their movements easier to detect. Exposure as Strategy Haydar keeps clear of the transaction to avoid being identified, leaving Lawson to act as the visible disturbance. The strategy works only if the resulting pressure moves the right people rather than driving the target underground or exposing Lawson before he is ready.

Control Changes Hands

Orders from Afar A Revised Plan Niles tells Lawson that the Council has changed the assignment: Haydar will follow the Shepherd through Peshawar, while Lawson will wait across the border for coordinates. Lawson objects because the new division takes control of the pursuit out of his hands. Dependence on a Remote Link The arrangement protects Haydar’s cover and uses his knowledge of the city, but it leaves Lawson reliant on texts and coordinates in isolated terrain. He accepts the order despite believing that fewer dependencies would give him a better chance of staying alive.

A Plan Without a Target

The Intercept Collapses A Broken Assumption Lawson and Veena reach the planned kill zone expecting the Shepherd to accompany a client. Cutter’s team kills the client first, then reports that the Shepherd has separated and headed back toward the border. Improvisation Under Pressure The mission no longer offers a stationary intercept or a predictable approach. Lawson and Veena turn back without support, trying to regain contact before the Shepherd escapes; the delay leaves them tired and increasingly dependent on field judgment rather than the original plan.
