The hollow booming noises grow steady and rhythmic, accompanied by smashing glass. A hoarse, madman's voice, terrifyingly familiar, shouts: "Come out! Come out, you little shit! Take your medicine!" Danny sees pictures torn off walls, a record player overturned, records broken into jagged black wedges. A shaft of harsh white light comes from the bathroom, and the word "REDRUM" flickers on and off in the medicine cabinet mirror like a red eye. Over the white porcelain lip of the bathtub, a hand dangles limply, with a slow trickle of blood running down one finger. Danny begs Tony to stop, but the vision continues. He finds himself crouched in a dark hallway on a blue rug with twisting black shapes, listening to the booming approach. A shape turns the corner, lurching, smelling of blood and doom, swinging a mallet from side to side, slamming it into the walls. Aftermath and Significance

Danny returns to reality sitting on the curb, his shirt sticking damply to his back, his body bathed in sweat. He has urinated in his terror. The booming sound still echoes in his ears, and he can still see the limp hand and the word "REDRUM." When his father's car arrives, Danny momentarily hallucinates a short-handled mallet clotted with blood and hair in the front seat, which then resolves into a bag of groceries. The vision establishes the central conflict of the novel: the Overlook Hotel is a place of supernatural evil that will attempt to destroy the Torrance family, and Danny, with his psychic sensitivity, is both the primary target and the only one who can perceive the true nature of the threat. The word "REDRUM" becomes a recurring motif, a symbol of the murderous intent that the hotel harbors, and its eventual decoding as "MURDER" marks a crucial turning point in Danny's understanding of the danger they face.
