Journey and Psychic Call

Hallorann, a tall black man with a modest afro beginning to powder white, had worked at the Overlook for two seasons and possessed a psychic ability he called "the shining," inherited from his grandmother. He recognized this same gift in Danny Torrance, a five-year-old boy with an exceptionally powerful shine, and had warned him about the hotel's dangers, telling him, "If there is trouble… you give a call. A big loud holler… I might hear you even way down in Florida. And if I do, I'll come on the run." On December 1, while driving back from a vegetable market in Florida, Hallorann was struck by a powerful psychic blast from Danny, a scream of pure panic that felt like a ".45 caliber scream" shot into his head. The message was clear: "OH DICK OH PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE COME!!!" This call, far louder than the playful mental shout Danny had given him at the Overlook, propelled Hallorann into immediate action. He fabricated a story about a son shot by a white boyfriend to get time off from his manager, Queems, and flew to Denver, enduring a terrifying landing in a blizzard. He then drove a rented Buick through the worsening storm, nearly going off the road, before a snowplow driver, Howard Cottrell, directed him to rent a snowmobile from Larry Durkin in Sidewinder. The journey was a physical and psychic ordeal, with the hotel's malevolent force attempting to drive him away with hateful, racist mental images, screaming, "GET OUT OF HERE YOU DIRTY NIGGER THIS IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS." Despite the assault, Hallorann pressed on, driven by his bond with the boy.

Arrival and Ambush

Hallorann arrived at the Overlook on his snowmobile, having survived a harrowing attack by a hedge lion that came to life, which he defeated by setting it on fire with his Zippo lighter and a gas can. He found the hotel's front gate locked but forced his way through, the remaining hedge animals clustering at the base of the steps. He burst through the lobby doors, calling out for Danny, and saw blood on the stairs and a scrap of pink robe. Before Hallorann could fully turn, Jack struck him with the roque mallet, the blow matted by the parka's hood but still powerful enough to send a rocket of stars through his head. Jack struck again, the mallet slicing sideways, shattering Hallorann's cheekbone and most of the teeth on the left side of his jaw. Hallorann collapsed, unconscious, his rescue attempt cut short in an instant.

Consequences and Aftermath

Hallorann's arrival, though ending in his own incapacitation, created a critical diversion. In the aftermath, Hallorann became a steady, healing presence for Danny, meeting him at the Red Arrow Lodge in Maine the following summer, where he comforted the grieving boy and affirmed their enduring friendship.
