Estes Park, Colorado, is the closest town of any size to the Overlook Hotel, situated roughly forty miles east over mountain roads that close from late October or early November until April. It functions as the last outpost of civilization before the hotel's winter isolation, the place where the Torrance family makes their final supply runs and where Jack Torrance conducts his research into the hotel's past. The town's library, a modest vine-covered building with a bronze statue of an obscure Civil War general on its lawn, holds the newspaper archives that Jack uses to trace the Overlook's history of gangland murder, Mafia ownership, and sexual scandal. It is also the site of the Sidewinder Public Library, where Jack, suffering from a headache caused by a warped microfilm reader, makes his ill-advised long-distance phone call to Stuart Ullman, taunting him with the hotel's sordid past and nearly costing himself his job.

Estes Park is the last place where the Torrances can obtain supplies before the snow closes the roads. It is where Wendy and Danny drive the hotel truck to buy milk and do Christmas shopping in October, and where Jack later goes alone to the library. The town's drugstore contains a telephone booth from which Jack calls Ullman, and its streets are where he meets Wendy and Danny after that call, the three of them walking back to the hotel truck together as snow begins to fall. The town's Conoco station, run by Larry Durkin, becomes the critical point of contact for Dick Hallorann, who, after a harrowing drive from Denver, rents a snowmobile there to make the final push to the Overlook.

Site of Research and Revelation

The Sidewinder Public Library, located one block down from the town's business area, houses the newspaper files that Jack uses to piece together the Overlook's hidden history. Working with the Boulder Camera and a warped microfilm reader, he confirms the details of the 1966 gangland murder of Vittorio Gienelli in the Presidential Suite, the hotel's subsequent use as a Mafia key club, and its later operation as a brothel under Horace Derwent's ex-wife. This research fuels his confrontation with Ullman and his growing obsession with the hotel, a fixation that the Overlook itself seems to encourage.

Hallorann's Arrival and the Final Push

After flying into Denver and driving through a blizzard, Hallorann reaches Estes Park and, following the advice of plow driver Howard Cottrell, goes to Durkin's Conoco station. There, he rents an ArcticCat snowmobile and, after a tense exchange with the reluctant Durkin, trades his overcoat for Durkin's fur-lined parka and ski mask. This transaction, facilitated by Cottrell's name and the mittens he lent Hallorann, provides the cook with the essential gear and transportation to make the final, dangerous leg of his journey to the Overlook, where Danny's telepathic cries for help have been growing increasingly desperate.
