Gas Can

The Gas Can is a red metal container of gasoline that Dick Hallorann carries strapped to the back of his rented ArcticCat snowmobile during his desperate midnight journey from Sidewinder to the snowbound Overlook Hotel. It is the object that saves his life when the hotel's supernatural forces ambush him on the road, and later provides the fuel that allows him to complete the rescue of Danny and Wendy Torrance.

Identity and Appearance

The Gas Can is a standard red metal container, filled with five gallons of ethyl gasoline that Larry Durkin, the Conoco station owner, provides when he rents Hallorann the snowmobile. Durkin puts the can in the back of the ArcticCat, and Hallorann later reattaches it with elastic straps after his crash. The can is sturdy enough to survive being thrown from the overturned snowmobile and to be carried through a violent physical struggle. Its bright red color and the pungent smell of its contents make it instantly recognizable in the snowy darkness.

The Battle with the Hedge Lion

When Hallorann is thrown from his snowmobile by a charging hedge lion, he immediately thinks of the Gas Can. He frees it from the overturned machine, twists off the cap, and splashes gasoline at the attacking creature. The lion hisses and spits at the fuel but continues its assault, striking Hallorann across the rib cage and knocking him onto his back. With the lion closing in for the kill, Hallorann yanks off one of Howard Cottrell's blue mittens, reaches into his pocket for his battered Zippo lighter—a souvenir from his Army days in Germany in 1954—and flicks the striker wheel. His gasoline-soaked hand bursts into flame. He drives his blazing arm into the lion's stiff, scratchy side, and the creature instantly becomes a prancing, writhing pyre on the snow. Hallorann thrusts his own arm deep into the snow to kill the flames, then retrieves the still half-full Gas Can and struggles back to the snowmobile.

Role in the Rescue

After Hallorann, Wendy, and Danny escape the exploding Overlook, the Gas Can serves its final purpose. Hallorann picks it up from where it leans at an angle in the snow, sloshes it to confirm there is still fuel inside, and attaches it to the back of the snowmobile. Twenty miles from Sidewinder, when the snowmobile's tank runs low, he stops to pour the remaining gasoline into the tank. It is at this moment that Danny spots the approaching chain of lights—the rescue party led by Dr. Edmonds—coming up through the switchbacks. The Gas Can's remaining fuel has brought them far enough to meet their rescuers.

Narrative Significance

The Gas Can embodies the transition from passive victimhood to active resistance that defines Hallorann's role in the story. It is a mundane, utilitarian object—a container for fuel—that becomes a weapon of elemental force when combined with fire. Its use against the hedge lion demonstrates that the hotel's supernatural power can be fought with physical means, not just endured. The Gas Can also connects Hallorann to the network of helpers who enable his journey: Durkin who provides it, Cottrell whose mittens protect his hands, and ultimately the boy whose telepathic call set the entire rescue in motion.
