The Engagement as Fact

A Triangle Begins
The fiancé described
Werther is told that Lotte is engaged to Albert, a worthy man expected to inherit property. He receives the information before seeing her.
Attraction ignores structure
The engagement does not prevent Werther from falling in love. The central conflict is therefore present from the first meeting: his desire arises inside a relationship that already has its own commitment.
Albert's Return

The Rival Becomes Human
A decent man
Albert returns and proves considerate, calm, and attentive to Lotte. Werther cannot honestly dismiss him as unworthy.
Jealousy becomes complex
Werther's respect for Albert does not lessen his pain. Instead, it makes the triangle more difficult, since the conflict cannot be solved by blaming a bad rival.
A Temporary Departure

Distance Chosen
Leaving the household
Werther decides he must depart because Albert is present and his visits have become intolerable. He shares one last evening with Lotte and Albert.
Hope carried away
The departure offers no emotional resolution. Werther leaves the place but continues to preserve memories and fantasies that keep the triangle alive within him.
Return to the Marriage

The Triangle Reassembled
Returning to Walheim
Werther admits that he has returned chiefly to be near Lotte. Albert remains her husband, and Werther knows the facts of their marriage.
A private contest
Werther nonetheless imagines that he understands Lotte more deeply than Albert does. The triangle becomes a contest in Werther's mind, though Lotte has not offered him a place as a partner.
A Kiss and Its Consequences

The Triangle Breaks
Lotte refuses Werther
After the Ossian reading, Werther kisses Lotte and she rejects him, ending their private closeness. Albert is absent from the room but remains central to the boundary she defends.
A fatal aftermath
Werther interprets the encounter as possession and requests Albert's pistols. The marriage survives the immediate scene, but the household is left to face Werther's death and its emotional damage.
