Wilhelm

The Sorrows of Young Werther

Wilhelm is the trusted recipient of Werther’s final messages and papers. Though he does not appear directly in these passages, Werther’s farewell gives him an intimate and practical role at the moment of crisis: he is asked to comfort Werther’s mother and receives the documents Werther chooses to preserve.

Identity and Role

In his last message, Werther addresses Wilhelm as a close correspondent, bids him farewell, and asks him to console Werther’s mother. The request places Wilhelm within Werther’s private circle and assigns him a responsibility that extends beyond receiving the farewell itself. Werther also tells him that his affairs have been settled, presenting the message as part of a deliberate final reckoning.

The Final Papers

As Werther prepares to die, he sorts through his papers, tears up and burns many, and seals others for Wilhelm. The selected documents contain detached thoughts and maxims, making Wilhelm not merely the recipient of a personal goodbye but the person entrusted with material Werther has decided should remain. The contrast between what Werther destroys and what he seals gives the act of delivery a deliberate, selective character.

Relationships and Narrative Significance

Werther’s farewell to Wilhelm sits beside a separate appeal to Albert. Werther apologizes to Albert for disturbing the peace of his home and sowing distrust, then asks him to make Charlotte happy. To Wilhelm, by contrast, he assigns the care of his mother and the custody of his papers. These distinct appeals show how Werther’s last communications distribute obligations among the people closest to the consequences of his actions.

Wilhelm is present in the narrative through Werther’s direct address and the papers directed to him, rather than through an answer or independent account in these passages. His importance lies in this role as witness and executor of Werther’s final intentions: he is asked to carry a message forward when Werther himself will no longer be able to do so.
