A Secret Name

A Secret Name
The protector's plan
Sophia decides that her timid guest needs protection and gives her the private name Berenice. Grandmother joins the imaginative ceremony by connecting the name to a queen and a constellation.
A fragile welcome
The game makes Pipsan special, but it also keeps Sophia in a constant state of responsibility. The guest's actual wishes remain difficult to read.
Fear of the Ants

Fear of the Ants
The island overwhelms her
Pipsan fears ants and cannot remain still, leaving Sophia to manage each new crisis. Sophia's protective role becomes tiring rather than satisfying.
A mismatch exposed
The family's unhurried habits offer little structure for a frightened guest. The island that feels familiar to its residents feels threatening to someone new.
A Forced Dive

A Forced Dive
Sophia's impatient solution
Sophia pushes Pipsan into the water, hoping a bold act will settle her fears. Instead, Pipsan's beautiful hair is ruined by salt water.
Affection turns possessive
Sophia admits that the hair was what she liked most. Grandmother approaches Pipsan without demanding that she become the sort of friend Sophia imagined.
Hiding Together

Hiding Together
A new shared game
Grandmother and Pipsan pretend that strangers are coming to bother them. They hide together, turning Grandmother's irritation with visitors into a game that Pipsan understands.
The guest claims a place
When Sophia finds them, Pipsan repeats their refusal to be disturbed and stands close to Grandmother. She is no longer only someone Sophia must protect.
The Awful Drawing

The Awful Drawing
Anger becomes art
Grandmother gives Pipsan paper and asks her to draw something awful. The picture is painstaking, strange, and far more expressive than Sophia expected.
Recognition without intimacy
Grandmother praises the drawing while leaving Pipsan alone. Sophia's jealousy and curiosity coexist, and the guest's brief talent remains hers rather than becoming a shared possession.
