California

The Sun is Also a Star

California enters the narrative through a single charged view: white-hot sunlight, a family unloading a truck, and Olly making an entrance that unsettles the ordinary scene of moving into a new house. The place is presented not as a surveyed region but as the immediate world beyond the narrator’s window, where brightness first obscures what is happening and then gives way to recognition.

Light and Viewpoint

The scene begins with the California sun overwhelming the narrator’s sight. Against a washed-out white sky, the light is so intense that she is briefly unable to see; as her vision clears, the figures and surroundings appear haloed. California is therefore introduced through a bodily experience of looking: the setting arrives first as glare, then gradually resolves into a family and a home.

A Family Arrives

From the window, the narrator makes out a truck and three family members: an older woman twirling, an older man at the back of the truck, and a girl who appears slightly younger than the narrator. Olly is the last figure she notices. Tall and lean, dressed entirely in black and wearing a knit cap, he jumps down from the truck and crosses the driveway with an unusual lightness before stopping to study the new house. His arrival gives the move a distinct focus: the narrator’s attention shifts from the household as a group to the boy who has just joined it.

Olly’s Entrance and the Setting’s Role

Olly’s first actions make the California house more than a static backdrop. After studying it, he bounces on the balls of his feet, sprints up the front wall for six feet, hangs briefly from a windowsill, and drops into a crouch. His mother responds by praising him, treating the startling display as familiar behavior. Set against the bright, domestic scene of a family moving in, Olly’s athletic entrance establishes the contrast between an everyday arrival and a boy who seems to move by different rules. California’s role here is precise and local: it is the sunlit setting in which the narrator first watches this new household and its most conspicuous member.
