Kelly

The Sun is Also a Star

Kelly appears briefly but decisively in the Second Coming Records scene that exposes both her relationship with Rob and her theft from the store. She is the girl with whom Rob cheated on Natasha Kingsley, and Natasha recognizes them making out in the shop’s pop diva section. The encounter turns an unwanted sighting of her ex into a confrontation with an act of shoplifting.

Encounter at Second Coming Records

Kelly is making out with Rob in a back corner of Second Coming Records, beside a poster for Madonna’s Like a Virgin. Their faces are partly obscured, but Natasha recognizes Rob by his profile. While the couple remains lip-locked, Kelly slips a record into the bulky jacket she is wearing. Natasha keeps watching even as she finds the scene repellent, and sees Kelly’s hand emerge a second time.

The Theft and Rob’s Departure

Two store employees approach Kelly and tap the front of her jacket, drawing attention to what she has taken. As they confront her, Rob’s smile disappears. Rather than go to her or intervene, he puts his hands in his pockets and walk-runs out the front door. Kelly calls after him, but he does not stop. An employee threatens to call the police; Kelly begs him not to and pulls two records from her jacket, Massive Attack and Portishead.

Confrontation and Exit

An employee takes the records from Kelly and warns her that the police will be called if she comes back. Kelly then bolts from the store, calling after Rob. The scene establishes her through a sharp contrast: she participates in the intimate encounter with Rob, yet when their shared misconduct is exposed, he abandons her and she leaves in pursuit of him. The text shows her caught stealing and fleeing, but does not state that she is arrested.
