Eclipse Sound
The SwarmEclipse Sound is a High Arctic setting encountered from the air on the journey to Pond Inlet. Its continuous cover of pack ice and the life and landforms around it make the Sound more than a point on the route: for Leon Anawak, seeing it marks an emotional return to a landscape bound up with childhood and belonging.
Setting and Approach
The plane reaches Eclipse Sound after following the coast across the Arctic Circle and passing over the frozen surface of Foxe Basin. Mountainous land then comes into view, with steep rock faces, shadowed gorges, meltwater, and snowy valleys. The aircraft passes above a blue-tinted shoreline, revealing the Sound as an unbroken layer of pack ice. The sequence places the water between the fissured frozen basin behind the travelers and the rugged island terrain ahead.
Ice and Wildlife
From the plane, the pack ice is punctuated by colossal white icebergs. Two polar bears appear as small figures moving across the frozen surface, while ivory gulls show as bright points in the air. Beyond the Sound, the glaciers and precipitous cliffs of Bylot Island rise into view. These details give the aerial passage its scale and make the frozen landscape feel inhabited rather than empty.
Anawak's Return
As the plane crosses Eclipse Sound, Leon Anawak is absorbed by the High Arctic scenery and loses awareness of the people around him. When the settlement of Pond Inlet comes into view, the landscape registers as a scene from his childhood. He has lost his sense of time during the flight, and looking down at these familiar surroundings brings a palpable release: he feels as though a weight has lifted from his chest. Eclipse Sound thus becomes part of the emotional passage from distance toward renewed connection with home.
