The Swarm

Lyon, France, becomes a key investigative location after material from a contaminated lobster at Troisgros is sent to a nearby university. There, Bernard Roche’s examination turns a restaurant incident into a wider scientific warning: the sample contains a potent neurotoxin and unfamiliar biological material, although the evidence does not establish what caused Jean Jérôme’s death.

The sample reaches Lyon

After Troisgros made discreet enquiries, a jar containing the mysterious substance was sent to a nearby university in Lyon. The apprentice had added water when the material began to break down, and for a time it seemed to stabilize. By the time the jar reached Roche, however, the jelly was disintegrating again. He began testing it at once, but the last remaining blob dispersed before he could study it closely.

Roche’s investigation

Even that brief examination revealed molecular compounds that surprised him, including a highly potent neurotoxin. Roche could not determine whether the toxin came from the jelly or from the water in the jar. He found that the liquid was saturated with organic matter and chemicals, but, short of time, put the jar in a refrigerator to return to later. The delay later troubled him: he had not known that a lobster might kill someone, or that the danger could extend beyond one person.

On 20 April, Lyon is again the setting for Roche’s investigation. He looks through a microscope at thousands of transparent spheres moving like fast tennis balls. He suspects that each contains a coiled pedunculus, a kind of feeding tube, and wonders whether these organisms had killed Jean Jérôme. The observation advances a biological explanation for the outbreak, but remains a suspicion rather than proof.

Significance

Lyon marks the shift from a disturbing kitchen episode to an unresolved scientific inquiry. The sample’s decay frustrates direct examination, while the toxin’s uncertain source and Roche’s later microscopic observation leave crucial questions open. The city is therefore associated not with a confirmed diagnosis, but with the first effort to identify a threat that may reach beyond the restaurant.
