Ucluelet, the west-coast distress-call town
The SwarmUcluelet, the west-coast distress-call town, enters the crisis as both a destination for emergency resources and the source of a fragmentary report of another attack. Its brief appearance broadens the danger beyond the Lady Wexham: rescue efforts themselves are becoming targets, while the station receiving the news cannot establish what has happened next.
A destination for emergency resources
By the time Leon Anawak reaches the station, the Coast Guard has run out of personnel to send there. Shoemaker explains that its available people have been dispatched to Victoria or Ucluelet, because the Lady Wexham is not the only boat in trouble. Ucluelet is thus named within a larger coastal emergency response, not as an isolated incident.
The distress-call report
Davie relays news from Ucluelet over a shortwave radio. A trawler had picked up a distress call from a Zodiac inflatable boat and gone to help, but the trawler was attacked and was turning back. When Anawak asks what kind of attack occurred, Davie says the signal has gone and he has lost contact. The report offers no confirmation of the people’s fate or further details of the attack.
Narrative significance
Ucluelet’s role is defined by the limits of communication: a distress call brings a vessel to help, that vessel is attacked, and the radio connection disappears before the station can learn more. The episode makes clear that assistance is no longer reliably safe and that the emergency extends beyond the Lady Wexham. Ucluelet becomes one of the named points in a growing crisis whose reports arrive faster than they can be verified.
