Walther P22 with a silencer

The Sympathizer

The Walther P22 with a silencer is the concealed weapon The unnamed narrator uses to kill Sonny, converting a carefully rehearsed plan into a killing at close range. Its preparation links The General’s money and Bon’s operational planning to The unnamed narrator’s decisive act.

Acquisition and Preparation

The General gave Bon an envelope of cash, and Bon used it to buy the pistol and silencer from the same Chinese gang that had previously supplied him with a .38 Special. Bon then made The unnamed narrator rehearse the plan until he had memorized it. The weapon was packed inside a tote bag with a small backpack, the narrator’s discarded clothes, a baseball cap, a blond wig, and tinted glasses, making it part of a broader preparation that combined concealment with disguise.

Use in Sonny's Killing

At Sonny’s apartment, the concealed pistol became the instrument of a close-range execution. The first bullet punctured the radio, muffling but not silencing it; Sonny then saw the gun, raised a hand, and was struck there by another shot. A third bullet hit between his shoulder blade and spine, but he managed to stagger toward the door before The unnamed narrator caught up behind him. Following Bon’s rehearsed instruction to fire from a foot away, behind the target and in his blind spot, The unnamed narrator shot Sonny behind the ear and then in the skull, bringing him down face-first.

The weapon’s role did not end when Sonny fell. The unnamed narrator approached and touched Sonny’s exposed eye; when Sonny blinked and his body shuddered, he fired once more into the temple from a foot away. The pistol thus marks the difference between the plan’s apparent completion and the narrator’s confirmation of the killing: the final shot follows a physical sign that Sonny is still alive. The episode makes the silencer-equipped weapon both a practical tool in Bon’s carefully rehearsed operation and the means by which The unnamed narrator personally crosses from intention into irreversible action.

Concealment and the Limits of Control

The pistol’s movement from the tote bag into The unnamed narrator’s hand changes it from hidden equipment into an unmistakable presence: Sonny fixes his gaze on the gun, and the silencer makes its outline longer rather than less visible. The contrast sharpens the gap between a rehearsed operation and its unfolding reality. The narrator has prepared his clothes, disguise, route, and breathing, yet the weapon does not make the killing silent or mechanically assured; the initial shot strikes the radio, and the narrator must finally test Sonny’s eye before firing again. The Walther P22 with a silencer is therefore not simply an instrument of precision. In the scene, its use exposes how little preparation can govern once violence begins.

Aftermath and Material Consequence

The silencer does not erase the shooting from the room: the first bullet punctures the radio, muffling its sound without silencing it, while the later shots leave Sonny face-down with a broken nose and blood spreading across the back of his cardigan. The weapon’s supposed quietness is thus set against unmistakable bodily consequences. A little more than three minutes after the first shot, The unnamed narrator leaves the apartment and descends the stairs, carrying the experience of the killing beyond the operation’s rehearsed sequence.
