Newhaven
The Thursday Murder ClubNewhaven serves as the practical base for Bogdan’s revenge against Gianni Gunduz: its port offers a convincing pretext to arrange a meeting, access to a boat, and a route back after the killing.
Port as a Pretext
Bogdan tells Stephen that he drew Gianni to Newhaven by claiming a friend at the port could offer him money. He asked Gianni to keep the meeting secret from Tony Curran and the others, then arranged to meet him at about two in the morning. The supposed opportunity was a lure, but it rested on a detail Bogdan could make credible: his friend Steve Georgiou had a cousin working in port security.
Harbour Steps and the Boat
At Newhaven, Bogdan and Steve Georgiou met Gianni and went with him to the harbour steps, where they boarded a small boat. Bogdan presented the journey as a plan to use the boat for smuggling, with the security contact turning a blind eye. Once Gianni was aboard, Bogdan told him that he was being punished for killing Kazimir and shot him. The boat carried the killing away from the port’s ordinary activity; Bogdan and Steve then returned to Newhaven and thanked the cousin, agreeing not to discuss what had happened.
Aftermath and Narrative Role
Newhaven is not only the meeting place but also the point to which Bogdan returns after the killing. From there, he and Steve drove to Gianni’s house, took his passport and other valuables, and removed money that included a substantial amount belonging to Tony Curran. Bogdan says the total was about one hundred thousand pounds and that he sent half to Kazimir’s family. The account, delivered to Stephen during a chess game, makes Newhaven the hinge between Bogdan’s carefully constructed invitation and the concealed consequences of his revenge.
