A Pod Designed for Emergencies A technical feature Terry learns about the Benthos’s layered decks, pressurized compartments, and emergency design. The idea of a detachable LEXAN pod is part of the wider engineering intended to protect the vessel’s crew. Safety inside a fragile system The ship is designed with multiple safeguards, but each depends on machinery functioning under extreme pressure. The escape system promises survival only if it can be reached and operated in time.

The Abyss Glider-2 Descent A rapid return Jonas descends in the Abyss Glider-2 to reach the Benthos and find Terry. Its speed makes the rescue possible, but the one-person craft leaves him exposed to the Trench’s predators. A mission under threat The vessel is damaged in the pursuit, and the encounter with Angel leaves Jonas with limited control. The emergency pod’s design will matter only if he can get it to a place where it can separate and rise.

Terry Seals the Barrel Improvised protection Terry climbs inside a UNIS barrel as water fills the hangar. The barrel is not designed for a person, but its titanium hull offers the only possible protection from the pressure. Survival without certainty She removes the internal console and seals the lid, then loses consciousness in the cramped space. Her survival depends on an improvised pressure vessel rather than the ship’s intended rescue plans.

The Pod Separates A last mechanical choice Jonas and Terry reach the damaged Abyss Glider-2, but its propulsion has failed. As the hangar door opens and the Benthos collapses, Jonas pulls the emergency release. A vessel without power The LEXAN cylinder breaks away from the outer hull and begins rising. It is no longer a controllable sub but a small sealed refuge carried by buoyancy and the ship’s destruction.

The Ascent Through the Layer A vulnerable rise The pod ascends through the hydrothermal layer and into colder water, with more than six miles still between the survivors and the surface. Jonas expects Angel to follow and fears that his dream is coming true. Escape and uncertainty A Kronosaurus attacks, Angel intervenes, and the pod continues upward as the shark returns to the Trench. The survivors reach the surface not through mastery but through a chain of uncertain events and the limits of competing predators.
