Abyss Glider

The Trench

The Abyss Glider is a one-person submersible whose role in the story shifts from rescue equipment to a consequential arrival aboard ship. Its AG-1 model is used to divert the Megalodon during an emergency, while the appearance of an AG-2, identified as a deep-water model, raises immediate questions from Jonas Taylor.

Design and Models

The narrative identifies two versions: the AG-1 and AG-2. During the rescue near the Lady Washington, the AG-1 is described as a tiny Kevlar submersible with a LEXAN escape pod. Richard Diefendorf seals himself inside before piloting it into the water. The account establishes its compact, single-occupant design through the way Diefendorf operates it alone, rather than through a detailed technical description.

The AG-2 is identified separately as the deep-water model. It has been assembled and mounted on a sled at the stern of a ship. Jonas recognizes it on sight, distinguishing it from an unfamiliar piece of equipment and immediately asking Celeste Singer whether she ordered it. The scene establishes the model’s presence and significance aboard ship, but does not resolve his question in the supplied evidence.

The AG-1 in the Rescue

As the William Beebe races across the bay toward the sinking Lady Washington, Harry Moon and Dr. Maren reload a tranquilizer into the harpoon gun while Richard Diefendorf and Celeste oversee the emergency launch of the Abyss Glider. Diefendorf explains that he intends to lure the Megalodon away from the people awaiting rescue, then bring it back around to give the others a clear shot.

Diefendorf pilots the AG-1 between the shark and an old woman in the water, accelerating upward toward the animal’s lower jaw. The collision draws the Megalodon’s attention; Diefendorf then reverses thrust and descends, leading the shark away in pursuit. The craft’s importance in the sequence lies in this controlled change of target: it enables Diefendorf to put himself in the shark’s path and create an opportunity for the rescue effort.

Later Appearance and Narrative Role

The AG-2’s arrival aboard ship gives the Abyss Glider a second function in the story. Unlike the AG-1’s clearly stated use in an urgent rescue, the deep-water model appears after assembly on its stern-mounted sled, and its purpose in that scene is not explained. Jonas’s recognition and sharp questioning make the machine a source of suspicion and tension between him and Celeste, without the exchange shown here confirming who arranged its presence.

Across these appearances, the Abyss Glider is associated both with direct intervention in a dangerous rescue and with the uncertainties created by specialized equipment appearing aboard ship. The contrast between Diefendorf’s openly stated plan for the AG-1 and the unanswered question surrounding the AG-2 leaves the craft connected to action as well as suspense.
